I went to a site today and saw MANY different types and (I guess)weights of silk. It wasn't Tai silk site.
What type and what weight(MMs)is good for modeling?

Usually 5. Maybe 8 for big stuff.

Danged if I remember--- I will go back and try to find it. I was just surfing around. I don't know what I am doing on the computer most of the time.

You can have silk. If you don't pull it just right on both sides you'll get a warped wing. I've also had a hard time filling in the silk with dope, seems like it takes a million coats. And, it saggs if the weather's not right. Maybe there's something I don't know but, I've given up on silk.

I like silk. It's my favorite covering material.

Howard,
I still look in shops for checkerboard silk hankerchiefs, etc., !
Just have to make sure I have something like Supercoat to shrink it!

Hmmm.. I wonder if Polycrylic would work on silk...

I remember coming across Dharma Trading a long time ago. For our purposes, they also have the 5mm Habotai.

Oh, I forgot to add, a covering that could shatter. The early dopes that we used (back in the 50s) with silk would leave a covering that would shatter in a "scuffle" (read, crash). In what would otherwise have been a minor crash resulted in the covering shattering and taking the structure with it. We quit using silk because of this. (Nylon worked much better at the time.) The new dopes are much more flexible and do not cause this problem. But I am thinking that the Ploycrylic, indeed, might.

OK, build a test bed and see. Somebody's got to try this, right? give us a report.
