Magnum 36 experiences

I'll bet a number of SSW forum users bought one of these in the last few months, after the glowing reports originating with PTG. So how about posting your setup and experiences.

My Magnum (XL36AII on the box XLS on the engine) is intended as one of 2 engine options for an ARF Nobler. The other being an OS35S. So I've got 2 sets of mounting holes in the Nobler mounts. I put over 1/2 hour of bench time on the Magnum after receiving it. Two days ago I discovered that it fits the K&B 28 Sportster holes in my 'knockaround' Skyray. Aaaaah, a test bed!

Here's my setup on the Skyray test bed:

5% Sig Champion 1/2 castor, 1/2 synthetic
11x4 Grish black prop
Merlin 'hot' plug
Tongue 'chip' muffler
0.250" dia. venturi with ST NV assembly (0.156" dia).
2 oz Chicken hopper tank (abut 1/2 pattern runs)
Ground RPM set around 10,200 in a rich (slightly rough) 2-cycle
60' lines C-to-C.

Lap times are 4.6+, so it's a bit fast. The engine seems to hold rpm pretty well, right through manuevers. It doesn't lean out until the last couple laps. So far I'm smiling! This has real possibilities. I hope I have time to finish the Nobler before it gets cold.

I know it is hard to find those 30 minutes to finish that Nobler!

On mounting hole patterns the Fox 35,Thunder Tigre 36, Magnum 36 Sportster20/28 all have the same mounting hole pattern.
I haven't got around to getting a Magnum, I have a few TT36 motors and really do like them. With the Slimline muffler they are really exceptional runners.This is the motor that is in my T.F Nobler.

What is the set up you are using on the TT 36? Stock or rework?
Prop, 2-2, 2-4?

They've changed things, then.

On my older Magnum .36s, the mounting pattern was about the same as the Fox .36 Mark III-VII Combat Specials, except that the holes were further apart by 1/16" fore to aft. This was considerably larger than the hole spacing for the Magnum .28 (which was the same as that for the OS .25FSR, Leo .28, etc., which was almost the same as the Fox Stunt).

On my Magnum .36 (the one I used in Combat), I filled in the two front holes with JB Weld and drilled a pair of new ones slightly to the rear. That allowed me to mount the engine in my Fast Combat planes.

do you think you could run the engine the same but with longer lines to slow down the lap time but let the engine run where it wants to?

Sure, longer lines will slow the lap times. So will a larger airplane. The Skyray does not present the frontal cross-sectional area that the Nobler does, so I expect that to have an affect on lap times as well.

There is a subtle difference in the mounting hole spacing. The Fox appears to be 0.625" and the Magnum 15mm (around 0.6"). As the Magnum holes are larger, one can probably 'shoehorn' it into the Fox holes (or file the holes a bit). The Magnum is longer and heavier than the Fox so I used the extra set of holes that I had previously drilled for the K&B .28 (also 15mm spacing).

The really nice thing is the muffler compatibility with the Fox (50th anniversary). My lightweight tube and tongue mufflers for my 50th Anniversary ABC Fox 35 fit the Magnum 36.

that is interesting, i would suspect then that double star & os type mufflers would fit as well.

i wonder how that became the "standard" or so it appears to have as far as mounting holes and muffler holes, the webra .32 and the os .32 fsr that we use all mount the same, and will mount where a fox does you just need the extension on the fox.and use the same mufflers

i flew my ares in atlanta and the lap time was 4.6 and i ended up winning but when i did my clover i was like why am i still running for so long and started to panic wondering what i left out, when i landed dad said that was a 4.6 lap and it all made sense
