Most of you know that I ran the Stalker 61RE a few years back and was quite content with its mild timing and miserly fuel consumption. It was no great powerhouse but was consistent and predictable but I moved on to the pipe as many have.

After losing my new bird early this summer I was semi forced to dig out the old bird for the Nats but had not overhauled the engine and it was just not making the poop it used to. After its wimpy performance at the Nats I left it sit awhile but it really started running crappy just before the Team Trials. So I tore it down and realized the conrod bushing was egged out so replaced it with a conrod from the 55RE. I metered fuel wrong at the trials for the cool mornings and warmer afternoons and screwed myself out of a chance to fly on Sunday but I believe most will tell you that were there that the engine was working.

While in the teardown process I considered what the engine was not doing ...all related to making power... and I opened the venturi one drill size for better consumption of fuel, cleaned up the ports a tad and gently steel wooled the piston with 0000, pulled all but one head shim out and upped the nitro. During the priming process it has a solid pinch/squeek bump over the top. Also be sure to rid the muffler of all baffles and gently open up the exhaust hole with a your dremel as large as you can without splitting the tube.

Bingo! It drinks 6oz. like a 60 should, makes the ponies without running away and a little overcompressed it is hauling the mail without fail and is consistent and predictable. Just need to check the head bolts once a week. If I blow a few parts I am not to worried as Kaz Minado can get the parts and the price list for all internals was down right cheap!

This the older Bluehead 4-2-4 from 97. I have a 2-2 style but never cared for it much. We may play with it next to see what makes her tick. Just thought I would pass this on as I have gotten a lot of good mileage from this motor and it is working better than ever. Possibly you may have written yours off but I think it has real potential.

We had one of those Blue Heads. It had descent power, but we could never figure what prop would keep it from winding up.

You could load the crap out of it but then it would not 4 cycle.

For a long time I cut down and repitched some 16/4 Rev-ups to a 12 1/2 x 5 1/2 with good results and yes it would wind up like a top in the wind. The wide blade allowed me to pitch up instead of down therefore taking meat off the LE of the back side of the prop instead of the TE which kept the prop from getting to thin and also kept the blades quite wide.

I am going to try my Eather three blade undercambered to load it a bit and I also have a Bolly 13/4 that is a bit of a stiff heavy blade. Unfortunately, I have been to busy to experiment in the beautiful Indian summer weather we are having. Hope to do so soon. Now that the power is up I think it will handle these props better. I experimented with the Stalker three blade 12 a few years ago but the feel and power was not there so I shelved the three blade ideal until now. I'd like to try one of Billy's two blades that he and Bobby McDonald run.
