Is my thinking correct here? Fuel

I have been using 10 GMA mix Powermaster for several years....very happy with it and have found it very consistant.
The other day I bought a gallon from Windy that he had added extra oil and some Armorall to. I'm no fan of Armorall, but it is probably harmless. This new blend ran like 15% .... the PA .65 picked up about 300-500 rpm with plenty of power.

My thinking is that the extra (excess, I believe) oil reduced the available burnable fuel, therefore acting like closing the needle?
Yes?
No?
Maybe?

Am I to assume that you didn't touch the needle when you switched oil? If so, you are probably correct. Not only was there less burnable, but a thicker mixture which also would lean out the mixture.

I am curious as to how much Armorall he put in, also. A little (as in a drop or two) can be beneficial if you have foaming problems with the fuel. Too much and you are not only adding water, but too much silicone which can eat plugs.

I have stopped using Armorall and have swithched to Prestone silicone spray. No foaming and no plug problems.

It is the silicone that is doing the defoaming. It is also the silicone that eats plugs. Keep the quantities as small as absolutely needed.

Thanks, Len:

The flights were back to back....with no needle change.... I may hike over to the Bagwan of Dope Finishes house and quiz him further..... I know that he thinks that he is doing the stunt world a service by doctoring the fuel, but I would rather have the stuff as blended.

I'd vote for the fuel being thicker and the NV not flowing as much fuel, effectively leaning it out.

did some experimenting with some old silicon Armorall(the current stuff is evidently a different formula). We added it by VERY small drops, just enough to form a drop on the end of a toothpick- maybe 20 milligrams. It took two drops in a gallon of Sig 10/20% fuel to completely eliminate the foaming, about 1/10th of what you use if you put in one squirt with the regular sprayer.

So if you want to use defoamer(armorall, or any silicon spray) I'd recommend spraying some into a small cup, add a small amount of fuel, and then add one drop at time and test each gallon by shaking it up, before adding another drop. A little more work.

Of course, the real fix is to build you plane, esp. a profile, with a light, stiff front end that doesn't resonate near the running rpm.

My guess would be that the proprietary fuel had less than 10% nitro and that Windy mixed his fuel with more precision. More nitro = leaner run with the same needle.
