Questions about the "new" generation engines

I have been posting questions about the *newer* generation engines lately. This is to increase my knowledge base for *replacing* vintage (Fox 35, McCoy Red Heads, Veco 35, etc.) in classic ships, which is my *first love* as to stunt flying.
I know about the Aero Tigers, but can't justify the cost, the Merco Rustler 40 sounds like a great engine, but have never seen one in person, and availability/cost are issues. The Brodak 40 and Double Star 40 both seem to work really well, and I have a DS 40.
It *appears* that the best *out of the box* low cost engines out there right now are the OS 40-46LA's. They seem to run a consistent 4-2 break without retimimg.
Are there any more animals like this? An engine, under $100 that will run a *classic* run, with some power, right out of the box?
And I am looking to swing 10 inch props. Some of the old designs (1st generation Argus in particular) will not permit larger diameters for ground clearance.
Any answers?

You can increase the LG length on a classic plane for ground clearance purposes of props. The appearance judges might hit you for a slight loss of fidelity points if they happen to be familiar with the airplane but ground clearance for propellers shouldn't be any kind of big issue at most contests!

Jim, you're right.
But I only got 12 fidelity points for an "exact" (except for a balsa canopy instead of a clear one) copy of a plane at KOI, so I can't lose any more points! LOL!!!
Just kidding.
I just enjoy building them right off the plans, and if they were a NATS or WC plane, I like to copy the paint scheme, etc. But they can all use more power! I have done the Fox thing, and they can be fun, but I am addicted to power now! I need help, treatment, halfway house..........

Yep, I guess I forgot those, but the only ones of those that I have had great runs with were retimed. Not a problem but some work.

BTW: Did you ever get my emails about the B-17G (4 X .049 British NATS) American Modeler/Hobby Helper plans from 1963?

Can't remember. I did sell some B-17 plans in the last 6 months, but don't recall what mag they were in initially.

Many people have had good luck with FPs right out the box. Maybe you are running them incorrectly.

True.

The Magnum 36 apparently runs well out of the box except for needing a C/L venturi. The ASP 36 seems to be the same engine and is available from "Just Engines" in the UK.

You are assuming that the new generation has to run like the old generation!

I think in general, that almost any schneurle engine, when run in low pitch- high rpm mode, will work great for our CL purposes. You just have to remember to drop down one size (40->36, or 35-> 25-28) to match weight. Even then you will probably have equal or even more power than the original generation 4-2-4.

Of course I also love the growling 4 stroking sound, so when you add that requirement, I agree that the LA 46 gives you the most bang for the buck.

Let it go on a rich 2, and it'll pick up powewr on maneuvers, I promise you...

Use an APC 10 X4, launch at 10 G, or something like that. Or an APC

10 X 3 at 11,000/12.000.

If you ain't gonna use it, sell it to me!

No, I actually *like* it quite a bit. It just isn't a good fit for the Argus. makes it a touch too nose heavy.

It was retimed to run a 4-2. But at a *very* high rpm.

I am toying with doing a refinish of the Spacehound and using it in there. Sirotkin ran a combat engine on bladder with a 10-4 prop. Would be *authentic*.

I already launch at over 10000 and it is 4 cycling there. I need a 10 inch three blade bolly prop pitched to 3.8
