Palmer Hurricane

Back in 1965, right before I entered the service, I started building a Veco Hurricane. Half completed, it hung in my parents basement for about 10 years before I rediscovered it. Needless to say it was beyond saving, but I always wondered what kind of a stunter it would have made. I've seen several references to completed models but haven't seen any pictures and more importantly, the model's performance. I might undertake one if the reports were favorable. I know that there is a good hand cut kit available for the model.

Perhaps he'll chime in here with details, but Gary Tultz has one that flies very well. It is pictured in (I think) the July/August, 2001 Stunt News, along with his "Apollo". There were several at VSC this year too.

If you're planning to build one, Larry Richards has a great kit. This is the Veco version of Palmer's Hurricane design. He is closing his shop temporarily, but had 1 Hurricane left according to his last post.

No joke. This is like saying Rolls Royce builds a great car. He has only the one left, last time I talked to him. Handcut, boxed and sent with love and attention to perfection. If you want a Palmer Hurri, buy this one- or wait 'till March for another.

I believe Richards Kits does a hand cut PH as does Tony Cincotta in OZ.

John Ashford has built a couple of very pretty ones, I think the earlier of which was pictured in Stunt News. My understanding is that they fly very well indeed- perhaps he will appear here and give you a first hand account.

By the way, this is one of the harder Veco collector finds. Not produced in large numbers like the early and mid 50s kits.

The problem with assessing this design from a flying standpoint is that most were built from the kit, and that can mean on the heavy side.

I'm sure, though, that the Cottage Industry ones will make fine PA ships. Nothing, moments wise, really deviates much from the norm. As usual, it comes down to trim, wt (as mentioned), pilot skill and training, appropriate motor.
