Just thought I'd revisit the photos only theme.
In case anyone thought I couldn't do anything but scale types,here are some pics of my old time "Humomgous".It's from an RSM kit (which was excellent).I tried to do the entire airplane as I would have in 1949,the only concessions to "modernity" were; adding a tip weight box and line slider,and butyrate dope instead of nitrate and fuel proofer
Power: Atwood Triumph .49
Prop:12-5
Lines: .018x65'
Covering: Silk with jap tissue trim,silkspan on wood surfaces.
Finish: Clear dope.
Wheels: Banner (hubs only,new tires)
Spinner: B&D
Hinges: "DeBolt Speedwagon" style strap and dowel.
Weight: 37oz.

YEAH, RON! Okay, I love it, you knew I would, but now for the Questions:

1) Who's the Pilot again, (what's he made of?)

2) Where did the Retreads for the Banner hubs come from?

3) Did you scratch the metal hinges? Are they brass?

4) I am very partial to your ply horns.

5) Your leadouts being in the wing, I can see why you didn't use the oval eyelets in the fuse side. (My Mother-in-law would say, "FINE!")

6) Your choice of engines is commendable, IN SPADES!

7) As this is the 'epitome' of C/L airplanes, forgive the last 3 'non-questions' and allow me to say I am inspired; I'm doing a similar project and everything has to be authentic. Great job.

(1)Hugh Mongas was a well known playboy and stunt pilot of the 40s&50s.
I carved him from a block of balsa.
(2)I really don't remember the brand,but I "popped" them off of a set of modern wheels, DuBros I think,and stuffed the Banner hubs into them.
(3)Yes they're scratch.The "bands" are .005 stainless.the "dowels" are thin wall 6061 AL tube.The design is stolen directly from Hal DeBolt's U.C.designs of the 40s and 50s.Take a look at any of his plans.

Very nice Ron, but why don't you put some paint on it? Paint was invented back then you know.

I used to use plywood horns myself and they lasted an incredibly long time with a brass eyelet for a bearing.

There wasn't anything underneath I needed to hide.

As you said,the horns are fine as long you bush them,but the main reason for them was to be period correct.
