Buccaneer 740

I looking to start up on a winter project. Looking at the buccaneer. Has anyone flown this plane? Planning on putting a reworked LA40 in it.

Yep, I have the airplane that is in the picture on the Ultra Hobbies kit box with a box-stock LA 46. Don Hutchinson built it and I inherited it after Doug Moon won Expert at a Dallas meet with it. Great airplane and may I suggest you really think about using a stock LA 46, the 46 is lighter than the 40 by a little and nothing has to be done to make it a killer.

Do a search on "Buccaneer 740" and you should find several threads about the airplane and how to set up the LA 46.

I flew the Buccaneer 746 for a few years and felt it was a very fine design. I've seen the 740 fly and have the same opinion.

If I was building a 740, I'd give the 40 serious consideration over the 46. While the 46 might be a bit lighter and have slightly more power, those advantages might be outweighed by having to use heavier lines. You can use .015s on the 40, while the .46 would need .018s. The difference can sometimes be dramatic on a 40/46 size plane. Hard to say which engine would be best without trying each setup to see.

I am pretty sure I have read on this forum that a few top flyers use 18's on ships that are legal with 15's because it gives them more of a solid control feel. The lines are not an issue and believe me power is addictive.

I flew a Buccaneer 740 with a Byron Barker FP 40 and BYO prop. It's a very solid design (as is the case with any of Allen Brickhaus designs). Was always a good plane in windy conditions.

I'am in the finishing stages of a Buccanner 740 by the kit from Doug and Steve exlent kit.I'am putting a Richard Oliver Ro-Jett .40 BSE in mine. All I have heared was great commits about this plane.And by the way it doesn't take a rocket scienctist to put one together either.
