Question about a Sterling Kit

The neighbor is moving and he gave me a bunch of odds and ends for model planes. One of the items he gave me is a Sterling P-61 Black Widow kit. Complete with all the parts including the decals. They say it is a six way kit with some of the options being Rubber, RC and CL. Cl would be a twin engine with two 1/2a. Anyone know anything about this kit??

Those 6 way kits make very iffy CL models. Sure, it can be done.

Usually, though, they are a bit fragile, and engine installation gets to be very creative at times.

What Currell said. They are basically stick and tissue rubber band models in the tradition of Guillows and Cleveland before that. You CAN make a C/L version out of them--I began with a Guillows Spitfire--but it's something you want to do very carefully.

I've still got a Guillows P-40 that I simply built up and painted and hung from the ceiling, which is a good use for them.

If I was going to power that kind of thing, I'd either stick with the quiet charm of rubber and hope they free flight well, or go get one of these new software programs and engineer a proper electric motor installation with a micro R/C set up.

I'd put the puppy on eBay as fast as I could- then go put the $s in a choice of Brodak, RSM, Larry Richards, etc., etc., etc. pocket...

The XP-61E dayfighter/F-15 "Reporter" photo ship with the slim center nacelle and the long bubble canopy isn't too bad looking.
I have thought about using the plans in Model Aviation for the P-61 and building one for Profile Scale- don't know of anybody else ever building one before for C/L.

I once had a crazy moment and put an TD .020 in a Guillow P40 and flew it, quite fast I might add, on 35 foot lines. Never again. I gave it, sans engine, to the kid downstairs. He hung it wisely above his desk. Then he went on to learn how to fly .35 powerd trainers.
In other words, don't believe everything you read on a set of Guillows plans.

Right on, Ty. My Guillows P40 had a dual-port Black Widow, set back 1" to align the prop with the cowling. Fully sheeted fuse and wing made it heavy, but it flew like a Formula 40! (at least from where I was standing, at the handle!) Landing was classic somersault-and-tumble. It still hangs in my workshop.
