<Kosak had won the first World Extreme Ironing Championship in
Munich in September, based on running a course through several
stations (e.g., up in trees, in the middle of streams) and ironing a
designated garment. An October Wall Street Journal story shows
the "sport" as growing in prominence. South African Anton Van
De Venter, 27, broke the high-altitude record in August by ironing
his national flag at the 20,000-foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro,
while nude, in freezing temperatures (quote: "I came, I saw, I
pressed a crease"), and British diver Ian Mitchell sawed through ice
in Wisconsin in March and submitted photos of himself in a wet suit
"ironing" (with a Black & Decker Quick 'n' Easy) a shirt that was
braced against the underside of the ice.>>

Makes as much sense as calling model airplane hobbiests sportsman. Hehehehe

Finally got the old Shark 45 flying properly again today. I had to add tip weight, move the leadouts forward & change from 5-29 fuel to 10-22. This is after cleaning the soldering paste out of the fuel filter. Turns out soldering paste doesn't melt in alcohol. That's what caused the crash, I didn't short tank myself after all. Live & learn. I'm going to use brake cleaner to clean out re-worked tanks in the future. Other than those changes, trim was pretty close. I didn't have to do anything at the handle. It's actually flying quite well again, in spite of the extra weight of the repairs on an already heavy airplane. It was 70 ounces before, I'm afraid to weigh it now. More nitro & less oil to the ST.60 gave me enough power to haul it's lardbutt. Tom Lay built the ST & it's a real horse of an engine. Dependable as a Timex as long as fuel is getting to it.
I have the phone number of the guy that does the mowing over at FOD now, so I can call & let him know when I'm coming over & he'll mow the circle for me. I helped him quite a bit when he was learning to fly R/C. Nice guy. Maybe now I can start flying a little more regularly. I have another new guy flying a ukey so I'll have company in the circle again.
None of the guys that used to annoy me were there today & most of the ones I like were. It was a nice day of flying.

Another example of using competition to publicize. Wonder why the AMA doesn't do the same with model aviation?

The Japanese seem to be holding eating contests. I read an article on it recently; one guy that is top champ is a little dude shorter than I am and skinny as a rail. I'd tell you what he put down just in the warm up round to the last meet but you wouldn't believe it anyway...

They put that guy up against a bear in a hotdog eating contest. Bear won without breaking a sweat of course. But he did eat alot. Very elastic stomach on that guy.

News of the Weird...An R/C Guy mowing a circle for C/L.
Never thought I'd see the day...
Took my big Gee Bee out to the R/C field one day, with the transmitter from my glider. One of the 'rushers-up' was quick to exclaim, "Hey! This thing has cables out of the left wing! It's not R/C!"
