It's funny, Currell,
I have no grudge against Bill Gates.
We tend to forget what he accomplishrd, if there is a Stuka Stumt for us to enjoy, it is a lot due to what he did.
Bill started his carier accepting a job at IBM that nobody wanted:
A 5 year exclusive contract to work on the develoment of the IBM operational system.
He thought, "I'll take this job, learn all I can and then get into business on my own."
Does he want to get the best on any deal? Sure he wants, but who in business doesn't?
The only difference between Bill Gates and the rest id his bank account.
If he wasn't the richest man in the US nobody would be screamimg "bloody murder" on his practices...
That's America, Currell.
We might not like it but the woeld has yet to see something better...
God bless you!
In Christ,
Ion

Neither do I.

That's absolute crap. Bill took advatage of a situation. He stole or bought most of what he did getting things started. Today Microsoft is a giant company, but at the time, Billy Boy was just a good (or viperious, depending on how you look at it) business man. Software was already developing quickly. We would have ended up here, or near here anyway and probably in better shape without Microsoft.
>Bill started his carier accepting a job at IBM that nobody

Sorta true. Bill made his infamous deal with IBM because IBM didn't think software would be such a big deal. You've been watching too much "Pirates of Silcon Valley"
>A 5 year exclusive contract to work on the develoment of the
>IBM operational system.
Again, sorta true. The deal was for IBM to "buy" DOS (an OS Bill had purchased - originally called QDOS - quick and dirty OS - Bill was never much of a prorammer, but Paul Allen was). Instead, bill worked out a licensing deal that would pay him a percentage of all hardware sold. In exchange, IBM could install as many units as they wanted. Cool till the part where the deal was exclusive.
>He thought, "I'll take this job, learn all I can and then
>get into business on my own."
Hmm, scary that you know what Bill thought.
>Does he want to get the best on any deal? Sure he wants, but

His deal was extortionish. But hey, IBM was stupid enough to go for it. I'll give Bill this, he saw what software could mean. It's a shame Congress waited too long to go after MS business practices. At this point, Bill owns too many congress critters. About all the justice department's investigation did was teach MS that politics was worth spending money on. Making money on your idea is fine, preventing others from competing through legislative mandate or anti-competitive practices isn't so fine.
Microsoft violates Rico statues every day. But then, Major League Baseball has been able to dodge anti-trust laws for years (bringing it sorta back to topic)

Excuse me. Far as I know, most folks here are not meglomaniacs.

He is the richest man in the world for the ninth year in a row. By last count, by quite a lot. According to Forbes magazine, worth some 32.25 billion, more than the GNP of about 2/3 of the nations on earth, but that's just an estimate. Forbes thinks it's actually a lot more. This is just his personal fortune.
Try starting a software company. If you have a truly inventive idea that catches on, watch out. You will either find that 1) you are bought out by MS, 2) that you are driven out of business MS or 3) that your code suddenly ends up in Windows and you are free to sue them. Good luck. One of the reasons MS hate Linux is that they can't drive something out of business that isn't in business and you can't steal code that isn't protected. Funny how the XP login screen is a dead ringer for XDM that predates it. Hmm...

Better than what and by who's standards?
Sorry, I'm just touchy on this.I never liked revisionist history much. MS is not even close to the best OS, though it has gotten a great deal better with the release of Win2000 and XP. Prior to that it couldn't even be classified as a decent OS. Why do you think 95% of the internet runs on UNIX, Linux and RISC OS? Because they are more stable and flexible. Most of the world uses Windows because Bill made an extortionist deal that didn't allow hardware manufacturers to put anything else on and threaten them if they tried. Hey, more power to him that he was able to do this and get away with it. It certainly made him a wealthy man. But let's not delude ourselves that he made it through software excellence.
OK, enough rating. Guess I'm just cranky this morning. The world is stuck with Windows and we did it too our selves. Like so many other things. Jefferson said that in order for the form of Democracy that he proposed to work, the country would need an enlightened, educated and interested public. Guess he was right.

The Stuka Stumt Forum runs on a technology known as the World Wide Web, which is the primary result of work done by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, which codified and offered working examples of both browsers and servers. One of the key elements in the explosive development of the web was the Mosaic graphical browser, developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign by Marc Andreessen and colleagues. Andreessen and Jim Clark of SGI formed Netscape.
When Bill Gates belatedly woke up to the potential of the Web, he bought the source to Mosaic to jump start a product known as the Microsoft Internet Explorer.
>Bill started his carier accepting a job at IBM that nobody
>wanted:
Bill started his carier by calling up Jim Roberts at MITS in Albuquerque, who was producing the MITS Altair--the world's first personal computer system, and lying about having the software programming language running on the 8080 microprocessor. This was hugely unlikely, because Gates and his buddy Paul Allen did not even HAVE an 8080 microprocessor. Allen had to write an emulator for one on the PDP-10 before Gates could test his code for Basic.
>We might not like it but the woeld has yet to see something

I don't know about the woeld, Ion, but I use something better than Windows every day. Way better.
And have since I bought my first 128K Mac in 1984. If the woeld is not seeing anything better than Windows, it's because they are not looking critically.
It's easy to pass along media spin as historical fact if you don't think critically.
Gates never went to work for IBM. He accepted their offer to provide them with a Basic. And when Gary Kildall did not take a deal from IBM to buy CP/M as the basis for an operating system, Gates made a quick deal to buy a clone of CP/M from a local company and used that as the basis of what became PC-DOS.
If you really want to understand what happened to bring the personal computer into existence, read Fire in the Valley a vivid account of what went on from a couple of guys who were there and saw it first hand.
In a small minority,
Cy.
Amen. One thing I will give Gates. He did bring standards to computing, even if they were lousy standards. I've had an internet account since the mid 80s. Before that, when I was in college, we had a very limited net connection. Started off with a Sinclair then a Commodore 64, Commodore 128 and finally an Amiga. Seemed natural to go to Unix based systms when I jumped to other platforms after the demise of Commodore. Gotta love Commodore. Never seen a company that could shoot itself in the foot that many times.

I was only trying to make a joke.

Because all the Russians, Chinese and Europeans are already playing in the Major Leagues.

Not this year. Wonder how it feels to spend twice what everyone else spent and lose. Look at the Marlins payroll. Yikes! Georgey could buy them 6 times over with this years Yankee payroll.
You just have to love it.
