well folks, looking for some input regarding possible replacements for the legacy40 alex donked in practice the friday before huntersville.we were lucky enough to purchase a pipied 46/junar built originally by george mitchell from a club member{thanks bill}which he flew to 2nd intermediate without appearance points or practice prior to official flights......needless to say he flys much better than i do

heres the problem....last fall we started a nakke with the thought that it was classic legal and would offer that as additional competion besides pampa....when the legacy plans came available to us..alex liked its looks and wanted it instead.he being the real flyer between us... he held the club and legacy it was.......

now we're back to the classic/pampa issue......since the days when he ordered his first basic trainer from the brodak catalogue hes wanted an Olympic........ now ......it fits the bill...but we wonder why we dont see any on the flight lines at contests......whats the deal?????? anyone out there fly one???????

any other suggestions that meet the classic/pampa guidelines in 40 sized ships?????? even though the 60 sized junar was no problem for him we have engines for the 40 size and at least for the next year we'd like to stay there

i like the nakke myself but he really doesnt like the styling ........ a battle is brewing

thanx in advance

I like my Olympic pretty well. It can do anything I can do, with ease. Which would really mean nothing to a competitor since I really only do loops wingovers and a little bit of inverted flying. Still, if you like it, I'd recommend it. I would bend a new gear with more forward rake and longer, to get the prop off the ground. If you only fly on pavement, more forward rake probably not needed.

Hi Dave,

Go ahead and have Watt get you the Olympic kit.
It will do fine for Alex!
The NAKKE is also a great flying ship.

hey bill,,
were thinkin that what ever we decide....... we'll build a pair so as to have a back up...... not that much more buildin time with jigs already set up.
al said today that hed like to make the change from monocoated wings and stabs to silkspan. quite a challenge since im a builder by trade not a finisher.i appreciate though, his desire to move up that step.

you guys goin to jville next month or waiting till january

Hi Dave,
Got to thinking about the two ships after I posted. The Olympic is just a tad smaller, so I think thre power to weight ratio will be better.
IIRC from the outstanding article Bob wrote when it was published, the Olympic is based (loosely) on a Nobler.
Next up for us is KOI in Jan.
Good luck!
Bill

seems the hard ware kit that comes with the brodak olympic {3 inch bellcrank } for example would have to be upgraded.....i think ill call brodak and see if it can be upgraded with the vector40 hardware if it is more up to date.....i didnt look in the vector kit randy smith had at huntersville......ive got 2 sets of morris hard ware so i guess its not an issue really
vector40 536sq
olympic 560sq
legacy40 565sq

Another idea would be a Classic and a P.40. Something like the Umland Excalibur, you could fly in 3 events, if the need be, and would be a great practise and backup model. Use some carbon vail (.5 oz IMHO) on the fuselage. I have seen Bob Smiley's Excalibur fly with the OS .25 LA-S, and it was surprisingly good, but I think I will still put a Magnum XLS .36 or Tower .40 in mine. Sometimes light works, and sometimes it doesn't, while extra power is always good. I would also suggest that a Classic/P.40 would probably not be a big handicap when entered by an Intermediate flier in Classic, competing against Advanced and Expert class fliers. Flying in two or three events would definitely be a good move. Steve

If you go to Thread no. 6581 FULL RESULTS GOLDEN STATE STUNT CHAMPIONSHIPS you will see that Phillip Granderson placed third with a OLYMPIC.

The Excalibur with the LA25 is a great combination. You need a light motor on the front to have the right CG and hence the performance. I flew it also with a modified (Larry Foster) fox 35. A killer combination. racked up a 502 in a contest with it in Classic. The Rustler Merco 40, while it had the power, the plane was a dog because it was too nose heavy. It weighed 36 oz with the OSLA25. It was a take a part behind the wing TE to transport in the Lancair.

Unfortunately I do not have that bird any more. Trying to squeeze more maneuvers with the same amount of fuel. An uncompromising situation occured. Alas, my best profile is now history.

Hey Dave,

First, thanks so much for the hospitality at the contest, we had a great time and will be back!

There are a number of Olympics at VSC each year. Dave Sabon is on his third or fourth now and it flies GREAT. He'd be a good person to give a call and chat about the plane with. He lives in San Diego and is in the PAMPA directory (or give me a shout, I'll give you his number).

Don't know why you don't see many around, it's a really highly regarded plane. I guess the original articles Gialdini (spelling?) wrote with the original publishing of the plans (or whatever) are a great read on stunter design. Alex would soak it all up like a sponge, then maybe we could boot him up and get on with some competing between us!

I have a set of plans for the wings only (don't ask me why, was bequeathed a bunch of plans when a friend bailed out of the hobby) if you want to get a head start on just scratch building one.

Take care,

Mike

I'm with Steve here. Phil's Olympic is a great plane. Looks good in the air too.

I would seriously take a look at the J.D. Falcon being kitted by Tom Niebhur. Look in the Product Review section on this forum for more information. It meets the stated criteria Classic Legal and very competitive. Joe Bowman won a lot of Advanced contests with this plane.

Hi Dave,
My two cents worth, again. Knowing Alex, I would go with the Olympic.
Part of this hobby/sport and getting better at it is "liking" the plane you are flying, especially the younger we are, and he "likes" this one.
There are many, many, many suitable double service ships out there. But Alex wants an Olympic. It will do just fine!
BTW: the Olympic is a ship that Aaron has considered for QUITE a long time, just hasn't had the time to build one, and his Ares has "filled the bill" for him this year when the PAMPA plane didn't quite work out. I wouldn't be surprised to see an Olympic from him in the not too distant future.
C ya soon!
Bill

Speaking of the Olympic, I had the pleasure of flying MCM's Olympic and the one thing that really bugged me was the inability to see the elevator. Probably just me but before I signal the release I want to know up is up and that the elevator wiggles when I move the handle.

It is a great looking plane and fly's really well but after flying Mitch's, I took it off my list for future builds..
