Off Topic: Modeler killed today in Houston,TX

I know this is a CL forum, but a RC heli modeler was killed today when his student took over the controls, lost control and the model flew back into the instructor and the blades hit the man in the neck killing him immediately.

REMEMBER, these airplanes, propellors, etc., can be very dangerous and many of us tend to get very lax sometimes about safety. Think about it the next time you go fly.

We are doing OK if we only kill ourselves. It's the innocent by-standers we should be careful about.

Where did you find this information? Any information on who the pilot was, or at least where he was flying?

Me? I was looking for info about the upcoming World Meet. Aaron Little said he was going to watch the World and not fly the Nats. I was ribbing him about how flying is more important than watching, but he made the point that the World is like once in 20 years. Using Goggles lots of stuff came up, but when I seen the story about the girl along with the posting about Texas I decided to add it.
Not that I was looking for death in the hobby, but it is something we should know that does happen.

The original posting about this was in runryder.com a forum primarily for us heli flyers. It was also run on one of the Houston TV stations and since last night, a number of people that were in attendance at the park in Houston have posted on runryder.com about this including the wife of a flyer that was a nurse and tried to administer cpr, etc..

Fro me, I am primarily a heli flyer, but also fly CL and park flyers. Just a crossover guy when it comes to models.

Ryan and I trade off flying with the helos on the spare runway at our club site. I try to watch them constantly while they are in flight. As well as the giant 3-D ships......

Truth is that we all, including CL folks, leave a lot of openinga for an accident.

A thrown prop can kill. Also a loose model.

I once awas flying alone and the lines got caught in a weed, the plane turned and almost faced me. It went across the field and crashed neaby,

It snapped the handle from my hand and nroke the safety wristband.

Remember all the silly replies about not renewing AMA memberships? THIS IS WHY WE RENEW (yes, I'm screaming, among other reasons. It doesn't bring back the victim, but it may well provide for both the victim's family, and any liability that befalls the owner of the model. And, yes, this type of thing CAN happen to Jake, Floyd, me, or anyone else! When you see how much "small" settlements add up to, it sure makes AMA renewal seem dirt cheap!

A horrible accident happened. It makes me wonder if the victim was at the wrong place and wrong time? Or what can be done to avoid it, I'm sure many things could be done.
It does put a shock throught my system as to our safety and safety for others.

At a contest in Kansas City, Kansas in 1958, I saw a guy walk across the stunt circle while a competitor was flying inverted. The stunt planes outside wing hit the guy right behind the head and decked him. The stunt plane lost the outside wing and crashed. The flier went over and helped the guy up and made sure he was ok. He then proceeded to beat the fire out of him. The guy that got decked should have known better as he was a competitor as well. Had he been hit by the spinner, he could have been hurt very badly.
