McCoy Series 21

OK you McCoy experts, I have a question for you. While perusing through some old model magazines , I came across some Testors advertisements for the "New" Series 21 engines in .15, .19, .29, .35, and .40 sizes, CL and RC. The only Series 21's I have are two .19 CL's.
Of course my question is...did they EVER produce the .15? I have never heard of a Testors nor a McCoy .15...EVER.

They never offered a .15. Currell

George, Many years back, about the time those adds appeared, I asked an executive at Testor corporation aout the Serries 21 .15. He told me that they were having a problem trying to assemble the ringa to the piston. As a result I believe that they decided to drop the .25 from the line.

We all have our opinons. Other than the funky art deco exterior, and excess weight from same, these engines run pretty good for our use.

For a plane needing extra nose weight to balance, they might be just the ticket, and inexpensive on Ebay to aquire.

<Edit upon further reflection>

Perhaps one of the Series 21 .35 or .40 engines might be beneficial to Tim McTigue on his tail heavy Smoothie, rather than the excess dead weight needed to balance with the Fox .35.

I'll Take ALL OF IF YOU HAVE THEM. THEY ARE NOT JUNK! YOU JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO RUN THEM. I HAVE SEVERAL ON COMPITION PLANES AND THEY WORK PERFECT PERIOD.

McCoy's have always worked well for me, whether they are Red Heads or series 21. On my Barnstormer, I use a McCoy 40 series 21 with the extra weight cut off from the ccase casting. Runs great with a rev-up 11-5W cut to 10.5-5.
This week I plan to install a series 21 piston, connecting rod and head in a Red Head Lightning bar case and cylinder. I will use a Frank Bowman ring and I expect a bunch more power than the plain RH Lightning bar that I am using now. Time will tell.

I have done that with a lighting bolt 29 and it is a sweet runner.
Haven't tried the 35, but the 40 RH case is a fraction too small *stock* for the series 21 cylinder to fit in. Can you bore the case?
I would like to put a cyl/piston from the 21 into a RH case I have.

Since I don't have a high opinion of them why would I have any to give you???? I may not know how to "run them" but you can't spell competition correctly either.

One other thing. Dick McCoy lives about 2 blocks from me and he says that he is not pleased that his name is on those paper weights either. Speaks heavy duty to me.

Scott, I would be pleased to! Dick is 96 years old now. If you ever need any parts for older engines let me know. There are still some available at his old shop which is in behind the house he used to live in. One of his sons makes glowplugs there now as far as I know. Dick helped me put a RR29 back together about a year ago with all the parts I needed being brand new. Made darn near a new engine out of it.

So what are you...an english professor? And so what if you happen to be - you knew what he meant.

Now if I was don't you think I would have also mentioned Scott's mis-spelled word? I just felt that having been "complimented" on how I run engines deserved a compliment from me in return. Nah, I don't know how to run any engine at all. I've only been using them for 40 years now, have never seized one up or had it turn black but haven't learned a thing........

One last point. When I expressed my opinion of the Series 21 McCoys I never insulted anyone individually. Never did use "you" this or that. I thought that this was supposed to be a open forum where we could express our opinions without taking a HIT. One of the beautiful things about our hobby is having so many different engines from which to choose from. Something for everybody. When I read SN mags contest results I have yet to see any 21's in the winners circles. But it doesn't mean "you" can't like them. I have only just recently joined this forum as I thought it would be a fun place to share our veiws of whatever. I can't say that I am overly impressed. Its apparently OK for one to make a accusation but when you counter it you get nailed with the likes of "are you a english professor?" It apppears that this forum is rather quite like a "clique" from high school days. Oh well............

HAY Don't sweat the small stuff. Your input here is just as important as Brett Bucks, John Miller, Dirt Dan, and Goofy. Dang we all get hit a one point or another. I get hit every other Tuesday.
The McCoy’s in question happen to be heavy, ugly, and sometimes hard to start when hot. HOWEVER, when you get one that is broken in the RIGHT WAY it’s a good engine. I have mine in my All American. With the short nose I wanted to put in a heavy engine so that I wouldn’t have to put in nose weight. I build very light, some times to light. My AA comes in at 31 oz with the McCoy .29 and only ¼ oz of tail weight.

Scott, interesting that you know my full name. I can only think of one Scott that I met only one time a little over a year ago. He had one of the best running Fox 35's I had ever seen. It was a bad day for R/C converted into U/C all foam airplanes. I won't go into detail about the --- ---- he was flying with that day. Could this possibly be the same Scott?

Scott, check out Len's comment on the Series 21 on the article about twins. seems I am no longer alone!!!!!

My Lightning Bar Red Head McCoy 40 with the S21 internals is now running in a Gieske Nobler and doing well. The Frank Bowman ring is still wearing in. A few more flights and I will open up the venturi and increase the prop to an 11-5 or 6. I am expecting lots of power from this engine. It has a good "stunt run" so if you are a tinker and can't afford the new stuff, Double Stars, Brodaks etc, then try the S21 McCoy with a Frank Bowman ring.
