Johnson S engine question

I have 2 Johnson “S” engines. One has the stamped S in the circle the other has the cast S in the circle on the crankcase. In comparing the two, the exhaust stack on the stamped engine is quite a bit longer with a pronounced angle in it tapering from front to rear. The exhaust stack of the cast S version is not nearly as long nor angled as much. Is the cast S version a later case from a different set of molds?

The engine with the cast S has broken out lugs on each side in the front. Can these be repaired and if so by whom? If not, can the piston/cylinder/wrist pin/rod/crankshaft be installed in a Johnson 35 crankcase or some other Johnson engine crankcase as a replacement?

Kurt:

Reference the earlier thread on Johnsons. I think the cast "S" engine may be a later production piece. The "S" is actually a combination of standard .29 and .35 parts to create an approx .33 displacement stunt engine with mild timing and low compression. I have not noticed a difference in stacks - I will look at mine tonight when I get home.

See above comments. I believe the rod/piston/pin/cylinder will be standard .35 small case parts. The crank would be a standard .29 small case part.

Kurt:

O.K., just checked out one each "S" with stamped and cast-in model designator. On mine, the cases are identical (or if there is any variation, it is more minute than a side-by-side comparison reveals). Sounds like someone may have cut on one of yours.

A lot of Johnson exhausts got shaved, and I don't mean just the R and CS.
