Hi Guys,
I am planing on purchasing a Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun. I have seen guns listed as three different numbers:43430-4vga,43430-8vga,43430-2vga. I called H.F. today and they said the guns were the same, however one was $64 and the other was$49. Does anyone know if in fact they are the same?

yes they are all the same. The number after the - is the price code.
last week it was $39.99

That is my understanding of the last part of model number. It changes per issue of sale flier. It gives them a very nice way to gather data about effectiveness of pricing and mailings.

If you order by phone, press the issue with the salesperson, they'll usually give you the internet price.

HVLP Compressor#4 source

So what's the word on the right compressor to buy to drive this air gun?

The article in Stunt News has me real interested, but I have no spraying capability or experience.

What do you need to put together a competent setup on a budget--and what don't you need?

If you go into a retail store to make your purchase make sure you take a copy of the Internet ad price with you. I had a freind in Fargo purchase two guns for me at their retail store. If he hadn't had the sale price ad with him he would not have received the sale price.

It's high time to stop & smell the balsa.

Write up says gun is for water based paints. Any problem using dope and other non water based paints? What can you use to clean the cup?

The write-up from HF indicates the needle and seat are stainles steel as opposed to plain steel--so you can use water based without fear of rusting the gun. It is definitely fine for other solvent based materials.

You can easily clean the cup with whatever solvent you use for the rest of the gun.

Cheap enough to try it or at least I will

Surprisingly, these might put dope and lacquers down very well...might be worth an experiment. THe price is right.

Let us know how it goes.

I tried one of these!

I used my shop vac to power it. Thing worked pretty well until I bumped my shop vac and dislodged some dirt and dust. You can guess what happened.

Wouldn't be bad if you used a dedicated vac. Or maybe a filter on the outlet of the hose. I just thought about the filter but I bought the HVLP gun which works well.

Jim,

The HF 43430 is a fine gun for spraying any material. I have tried dope, poly, base coat, top coat, acrylic and epoxy. All worked fine and cleaned up with their respective thinners.

A word of caution, I have seen what appears to be identical 43430's but on closer inspection, the cheaper gun was missing the gun mounted regulator.
