Yikes! I sure hope everything goes well for you. Its always an unsettling thing when one goes under the blade. Try kidney stone surgery, and having you're lower 40 plumbing roto-rooted! Not fun..AT ALL..

Other hobbies? Observational Astronomy, guitar, listening to music, motorcycling, Frisbee/dog contests(awesome German Shepherd:Zeppelin),recreational writing, camping/hiking, good beer sampling (want to start brewing my own beer soon), collecting and smoking tobacco pipes, computers, some bird watching (raptor spotting and identification), and lastly a 14 month old, already airplane loving son named Dylan James.

Building and flying control line airplanes are right up there though..life is too short to be passive!

For over 20 years I played the bagpipes and performed with a pipe band. Never had so much fun in my life but a set of adequate pipes is $1,000 and you'll need 3-5 years to get proficient on them. Requires dedication and stamina and (surprisingly) an aptitude for music. Our group performed 25-30 times a year. We opened a concert for Rod Stewart some years back...

I learned to sail as a kid, owned a couple of boats years ago but crew regularly on another boat these days. Truly one of the great escapes! Racing is addicting. Need to be in pretty good shape for it though. Sailing is an exceptionally technical sport.

I dabbled in photography while in college (mostly scenics) and won a couple of awards. I do mostly snapshots now.

I'm interested in woodworking 'cuz it gives me the excuse to buy more tools. I also like gardening but allergies minimize the ability to fully get involved.

I keep some simple fish so perhaps aqua gardening would suit.

I used to be into model railroading big time, first

I could call computers a hobby, but since I also am a network administrator for a living I guess that doesn't count.

Road racing bicycles - I've never raced, I just like riding
competition quality bikes, but don't have much time for that
anymore.

One of the reasons that I am so submerged in this hobby is the people that are associated with it. My lovely wife and I really enjoy seeing old friends at contests and at the Nat’s.

Possibly you could train a dog? to retrieve model rockets for you. That way, you could say that you didn't have to give up a modeling activity to recouperate. You could E-Mail BBuck for some pointers.

Lots of work but alot of fun--yes it is a very technical sport.

Licensed Amateur radio operator, KU8L, since 1963. Collect old cameras, old toys, and boat and airplane stuff.

A little woodworking from time to time, and support a professional symphony with digital recording technology and technical management.

Have dabbled in HO trains but not seriously. Done several TOSRV bicycle tours as well as the DALMAC (lansing to Mackinac bridge--quad century in four days.)

Best hobby is really learning new stuff--or re learning old stuff. Its what attracts me back to PA--and amazes me regarding the common thread in interests we all seem to have.

I also enjoy backpacking into the wilderness, a passion of my youth that I've taken back up recently. I used to fish alot as well as some hunting. I still enjoy the shooting sports. When I have the time I can get preety involved in phoyography.

I also am a liscenced Amatuer radio operator, AL7AA.

In the past I was very involved in fish keeping. I specialized in Killifish and Bettas.

Computers is also a huge time drain if I'm not careful.

You all have plenty of interesting hobbies, but i'm a little surprised that there are not more pilots. Here in Finland quite many pilots are also involved in model aircrafts or vice versa.

shooting-mostly collect old service rifles and try them out on the range.

I also am a full-scale pilot (not current), but as someone else said, the cost makes it hard to consider a hobby. Someday I hope to get my soaring ticket; have always been fascinated with that discipline. High point of my 1:1 career was chance to fly the B17 "Sentimental Journey" from right seat and have it logged as dual (captain was an MEI).

Of course, I have a hard time considering a large scale R/C turbine bird that costs $20,000 a hobby either . . .

I am a pilot also, but since I was doing it professionally (not now), I don't consider it a hobby.

First of all I wish you the best on the back surgery and hope you heal quickly. I can relate as I've only had one back surgery...as yet. I'm disabled with degenerative disk disease, which is the reason I got back into C/L flying and building.

Yes, I do hold a ticket on the "real" airplanes too, for better than 25 years. But, with the costs and because of the medicine I take, I can no longer fly. So....why not fly C/L again after a 35 year layoff.

I've enjoyed myself and learned so much in the past couple of years, thanks to a mentor and so many of the fellows here on Leonards Forum. I'm a lurker most of the time, but I've learned and used so many techniques that are proven by the collective experience of the fellow C/L group.

Somehow, I could have guessed this.

Let's see. I'm the groom, stable boy and all around grunt for my wife's hobby (dressage), I am the closet manager for my son's alternative band. (now this could be a full time job...yikes!), I am a mostly competent home IT guy with a bent toward Linux. (a REAL OS). I play guitar, but I'm not very good. I'm a good shadetree mechanic and hope to start a hot rod one day (maybe a kit car). I am a huge, HUGE baseball fan (don't start me talking about the Mariners, you'll certainly regret it).

That's about it. Not very exciting, I'm afraid.

What do you folks do to provide funding for you're toy planes? Thinking career here, not the illicit stuff 8)

Well, my career is Systems Analyst, currently for a semi-large financial company, but that doesn't provide much in the way of funding for my "toy" planes! By the time the wife, kids and house get done with it, there isn't much left. My main modelling funding comes from birthday money and other gifts (like Father's day, anniversary, etc.). Other than that, it's mainly scrimping and saving.

Collecting and sometimes building 1/43 scale classic Formula 1 and Sportsracing cars

Music collection, about 850 CDs, mostly R&R oldies, 50s and 60s

Useta race motorcycles, sports cars, sailboats and karts.

Ex professional pilot; helicopters and airplanes. Flew and instructed aerobatics for fun.

Recreating old model airplane plans. Regardless of what it looks like--it is only a hobby, along with webpage design!

Over the past few years however Old Time and Old Country (Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family) have taken over as my main musical love.

I've just got back from the Sidmouth Folk Festival in Devon (UK) where the standouts (for me at least) were Kieran Means (Sara Grey's son) and Walt Michaels (a wonderful blend of Country ballads and virtuoso hammer dulcimer playing) - both coincidentally from the US!

I also played banjo in public with a band for the first time!

The only other hobby that I have that has not already been mentioned is whittling/wood carving.

Whittling can be done anywhere (except over the living room rug) with only a sharp pocket knife and a piece of wood.

I have tropical fish. Before moving three years ago to our current home, I had seven tanks going (two marine). We called our house the Harvey Aquatic Center! Now I'm down to one tank of Convict Cichlids. My wife can't figure out how I can like loud music, loud motorcycles, and fish.

I tried full scale flying lessons, and joined an Ultralight club. I found it to be too expensive and time consuming. Also, for every dollar I spend on myself, my wife spends one on herself. That essentially doubles my expenses on anything that doesn't involve her. The motorcycle is exempt, because it is for the two of us. Now, if I could get her interested in model airplanes I'd be set!
