Chroma Base and other two part car paints

Help, guys, I need to know any methods of repairing silkspan tears when using these systems. Any dope products I have attack the base coats when I try to patch it. Dope doesn't affect the Chroma Clear. (??)

My All American Sr had Chroma-Coat clear on it, and the butyrate dope that I tried to patch the silkspan with reacted and wrinkled and cracked the chroma coat clear.
I just sanded it down and recoated with Chroma coat.

It does attack due to the thinner used in the dopes. Thinner will not work with the two part systems.

Thanks Doug, But is there anything to use to patch silkspan with?
I tried several things, auto primer as a "sealer", etc., but it all reacts to the base coat in particular. I used Sig Lite Coat to patch my Geo Juno, which is Sig colors with Chroma Clear over it. No reaction. (??) The Argus, however, which is all "chroma" system, wrinkled and crazed. Same clear from same quart can, shot through the same gun, etc., etc..
Need to patch some areas.

I know this will sound crazy but have you tried thin CA? If the span is wrinkle free it will lay right down and the CA will hold it beautifully. Tack the corners first not stretching the span, just smoothing it, wick around the edges and water shrink. It sands well and you can complete the repair however you want. I've found the CAs don't like some dopes, Randolph Bros nitrate for sure and probably others, but it will work if you use a little kicker.

that's basically what I did when I punched a hole through my almost all auto finish. I re-aligned the punch through, used CA to seal the "crack", sanded down the resulting seam and re-shot with K-36 primer and re-finished from there. Came out OK.

Haven't actually tried to put on a whole patch, but did use the CA to do a fix like "the other Randy" mentioned. Worked out ok.

Has anybody tried using that "wonder material" PC to attach the silkspan patch to the automotive finish? Seems to me that it won't attack the finish causing blisters (water-based)- it will adhere - it can be painted over with automotive paint.

What's PC?

Randy this is the stuff that Godzilla made famous. Made by Minwax and is a waterbased Polyurethane/Acrylic emulsion. There are tons of posts concerning its use. It drys in about 24 hours. Some say it sands easily.... I think it's more difficult to sand because it remains slightly flexible.

I don't have anything to patch nor have I tried it over automotive paint but I think it would work well as long as the patch isn't too large.

I'd wet the silkspan and apply the PC to the perimeter of the patch and let it dry to tack. That only takes a couple of hours. Somebody on this site is using it to shrink and seal the silkspan but I couldn't find the post.

Thanks. I just noticed that the crankshaft counterweight looks like Larry Foster had been after it No kidding... I just received my Fox back from Larry and the crank looks just like the pic.

By the way... the quality of engine work is outstanding! Been snowing like crazy here in N.E. Ohio so I haven't fired it yet. Can hardly wait!!!
