Time Machine/ Pattern Master photos

I'm making good progress on my Time Machine 60 project and would like to see some photos of Time Machines/Pattern Masters other people have built. I have not made any changes in the construction or cosmetics of the design so I'm trying to find a simple attractive finish that can be easily duplicated with iron on film. I do have a couple of photos of Warren Wagner's TM and it is very nice but his is the only TM I have seen that kept with the look of the original.

Good luck finding a picture of Bob Baron's 1996 NAts winner.

I have never seen a picture of Bob with that plane. Surely someone rook his picture with the Top 5 or with the Walker Cup.

I looked through a bunch of my old magazines and found a photo of Bob's plane in black and white. I have been told that the airplane was orange with black and white trim but a color picture would be great.

I'll see if Linda Bob took a pic of Bob with his plane. I saw him at our first Nats and after seeing him fly a practise flight felt he flew differently than any of the other top flyers there. I had a little difficulty introducing myself to Bob, he being the quiet fellow he was- but did manage to do so and told him he would win the Walker Cup. He did.

No photos from us, it turns out. I had hopes that we had one or two. I recall the plane was orange and black with a silver painted-on canopy. ST 60 and braided .018s

I should have a couple color pics of the '96 winner.
Let me check when I get home. Aaron, and I, watched Bob the whole week.

You bet somebody did. I will have to get over to Dads and sift through our Nats photo Albums but I am sure I have some shots of him with his Patternmaster.

Yeah, Tom Dixon said the Time Machine 60 is a 90% Patternmaster. I don't know what % the TM 50 and 40 are.

Is there a reason why TM is 10% smaller? Was original PM too big for a 60? Would today's 65 2-cycle or .72 4-cycle be enough?

I have seen "several" of the regular Patternmasters fly including Bob Baron's '96 Walker Cup winner. Also many other Patternmasters that just had the looks changed a little. All flew just fine with ST 60s. Most were Big Jim powered (Northeast) and some with Randy Smith or Tom Lay engines. They all flew real well.
IIRC, Tom Dixon developed the Time Machine for the DS 60 lite. A little smaller plane that builds quickly and flies great. The old "power" issue.
Would a "new 61-65" or a 72-90 4 stroke fly a PM better? Probably, if for nothing else, they have more power.
Windy Urtnowski has done well with quite a few designs based on Big Jim's PM numbers. "Bobby Champione" and Bill Suarez, too.

Tom Morris has, or at least had a color picture of Bob and the Walker Trophy on his picture board in his shop. Last time I was there though I think that he was moving them to another location - maybe the hangar. E-Mail him and ask him to scan it into an E-Mail message as a color jpeg and wa-la you can then print it on your color printer and have a copy of your very own.

I have a Windy video with plenty of Bob flying his 1996 winner. Contact Windy for the video. Windy actually focused on Bob's activities, no doubt because Bob just came out of a first place win at the Nat's.

I would love some pictures of Baron and the 1996 plane.

Thanks for all of the information and interest guys. I have spoken with Tom Dixon a couple of times and this is what he told me..........

Bob Baron flew the Pattern Master in its original form as designed by Big Jim Greenaway using a ST60. Tom said that Bob liked the design for its simplicity and for the way it performed but felt that a slightly smaller version would perform better in the wind. Tom said Bob built a slightly smaller version he called "Spartan". Tom said the reason for the name was because Bob folded a foam wing that did not have a ply spar and decided the spar was a must on a ST 60 powered model. If I understood the rest of the story correctly the Time Machine is the 90 percent version of the Pattern Master Bob never got the chance to build. Tom said that the TM is a simplified, smaller version of the Big Jim PM design using building techniques Tom and Bob developed.

I'm not making any claims or accusations but the model I show in is a 90% PM
and that was what Big Jim told me to do back in the early 90's
it flew absolutely Great with an O.S. Max SF 46

for size reference here's the guy I did it for holding the plane
BTW the building behind him was only 10 ft. wide

Maybe we could work out a deal for a Saito 72 UHP manifold set. You borrow my thing, I borrow your thing etc. There is a sequence on the tape where Bob is trying to do some "secret stuff" to win.

Sorry, the last spare manifold I had was given to Howard Rush. I only have two now, and they are on engines.

Tom Dixon sells the Time Machine plans in 60, 50 and 40 size. I'm not sure if he sells Pattern Master plans but you might check his web page. If not you might check with Windy.

By the way......

Mike McHenry sent me two color photos he took of Bob Baron's Pattern Master at the 96 NATS. The photos are top quality. Thanks a bunch Mike.

Once I posted a request for pictures of stock Patternmasters, 'cause I had never seen a PM of any kind. The pics below were posted... thanks again to whoever posted them. The first two are stock, the last was modified by moving the cockpit back. I think it looks better that way, m'self. The area is 760 sq. inches, and it could use a Saito .72, I think. The big one would take a big & strong person to fly in anything more than light wind conditions. "Big Jim" Greenaway sells plans for the full size version. He should be in the PAMPA address book, in NY or NJ. Tom Dixon does smaller sizes, called the Time Machine, in .40, .50 and .60 versions. I'm sure you can find accurate area info on Tom's website, but my recollection is that the .40 is 525", the .60/650", and I'm guessing the .50 version would be around 600". Your choice. Steve

Big Jim believes that the forward cockpit enhances the design aerodynamically, and also contributes to the motor run in that there is structure to adsorb the shakes....remember, Jim is a huge proponent of the ST.60.

So what is the neat little airplane in the PAMPA logo? It looks like a modified PM to me.

I beleive its something Steve Buso drew up.
Steve is quite the craftsman & designer.

The green one is Gary's. The pic, IIRC, was taken at Fentress NAF in Norfolk. I flew against him when he had that plane.
I, too believe that is Owen.
