Progress on the Magician

I've made a little progress on the Magician this week and thought I would share some pics of how it's coming along. This is Walter Umland's kit and it really is first class all the way.

Will be sanding a little more and then gluing the wing in the fuselage next. Think I am going to try to use some acrylic lacquer for part of the color. (thanks to Leonard and others for the paint advice). From what I have been able to find out, the acrylic will go over dope, but not the other way around.

I used Bill Sawyer's suggestion and covered all of the wing with one piece of tissue and then did the tips with another separate piece of tissue. Instead of tearing the tissue, I placed the edge of the second piece right on top of the last rib giving the edge a hard under surface to sand against and then sanded the sharp edge of the paper off with 400. Seemed to work okay.

I make the engine braces for my profiles out of 1/16th aluminum sheet. I cut it to the general shape with my scroll saw and then use a file to get the final shape. I finish them by sanding with 400, then use "Comet Cleanser" and a scrub brush/fingers in water and then polish with "Blue magic" to finsih off. Fairly light and easy to do. Makes a solid motor mount and keeps the engine from crushing the wood.

Looks first class John! One day I am going to give the tissue and dope a try.For now it is Monokote as flying is the main objective.Looks great make sure and post some pics as the colors go on.

Now that's professional looking. I just hate to see nice, clean, neat, organized shops. Now I gota go out and sweep, clean and organize mine.

Very nice looking work here. I built a nice flying Magician three years ago. Weighs like 31oz. but the FP25 doesnt seem to cut the mustard. Going to put an 0s35S in it for VSC. One of my all time favs as it was popular when I was a kid and flew a decent pattern without flaps.

My man! Congratulations! Yours has got to be the very worst 25FP on the planet. Thirty-one ounces and there ain't no mustard cutting going on?

Thanks man but my motor acts like an overloaded Dog! Sags overhead andf lean run aways as the flight progresses....needs a little work
..But I am pleased with the little bird, just dont spend much time on it.

Got a nice running late model pre-lightning bolt 35 that's going to go on it. On the test stand, it's turning 10,200 in a strong 4-cycle on Fox Super Fuel with a Top Flite 9 x 6 Super M. Probably use a BY&O 10 x 5 for flying.

That is one *beautiful* looking airframe. And you're putting my favorite engine in it (I have three). You'd think I'd come to my senses and buy one of Walter's kits for this one. So many airplanes, so little time...

BTW- if you need a muffler (tongue type) for the 35, the Big Art piece that Leonard sells is first class. Again, I have three...
