PAINT SCHEMES

One of the neato features of STUNT NEWS is the color photos of all the ZOOT stunters. I'm always looking for the "Perfect" paint scheme. Unfortunately, most models, with their 7 colors, whorls, and checkerboards, make me dizzy just looking at them!

The Sept/Oct issue shows Brett's INFINITY. Here is a simple 3-color job wih mosly straight lines: simple but elegant. I can't tell if it has panel lines, but this is the paint job I'll copy for my Brodak LEGACY.

Dr. Spark,

For paint and trim schemes which can actually be accomplished by folk like you and I, check out any decent RC catalog.

If you will think about it, their goals in presenting an appealing model to their customers is in line with what we are trying to achieve.

Dan: I'm just thinking about the miles of masking tape and time required. Besides, each time I put down a line of masking tape, it seems like a 50-50 probability that it will pull up the paint underneath, and make a big mess of everything.

Only takes time and a limited amount of skill. I proved that. Of course, it's not like my paint schemes are anything to write home about.

Proparc..I sort of think that Brett would be flattered to have his paint scheme copied. I know, I would (that is, if I designed one that anyone would want to copy).

The sincerest form of flattery is when you steal er borrow a desgin or scheme. I do it all the time. Once I thought I was being original with a scheme only to find it on a similar plane in an older magazine. Probably stayed lurking at the back of my mind, very lonely place, until it surfaced after hard thought one day out in the shop. (insert smiley face here)

I always start out with great intentions, then get too impatient at the end. So I slap on some stripes and go fly. For the RC planes, we always stayed with simple, angular schemes because the aircraft was always going straight across the sky in front of you (and the judges). I've been building model planes since 1961 and I never masked a curve until I finished my Oriental a couple of months ago. Very traumatic, but it turned out okay. Next: maybe I'll go buy a French curve.

Someday ... I'm going to do a Legacy or an Impact in base white. Then I'll go find one of the Harley airbrush guys and turn him loose. <LOL>

I sure am glad to find out that I am not the only one who copies paint schemes from other builders via Stunt News (and other sources). When you are as creatively challenged as I am when it comes to designing a paint job, you have to resort to other tactics. I can start thinking about a paint scheme for a new model and my mind goes completely blank. Of course, it does that at other times too.

Ouch - sounds like you tried this idea, too.

Too bad Ed Roth passed away. I sure would have loved for him to airbrush one of my planes.

Hey Dan,

First of all, Walt will abuse you no end for giving him an airplane with only one color, even if it is for the purpose of his painting the scheme on it. Then he will tell you that it is not any good because it is not one of his "designs". Then you will catch it because you fly with the "stunt clique" of Paul Walker and other "wannbee" stunt clique flyers. Believe me, he can write ten pages of abuse and have enough left for six or seven more of the same kind of letters. I have a file about 3/4" thick of letters from him full of that kind of abuse...when I want a laugh and it is kinda slow on SSW I just dig out the file and start reading.
