I just got plans for the Les Mc Donald STILETTO. These plans are the first time I have seen this rudder. Are there different versions??

Oh yes!There are basically 2 looks/sizes of stiletto. Your plans are for so called Stilleto 35 which was the first version. Later version was larger and sometimes called Stilleto 660. I bet the the rudder shape you're thinking of is from the later, larger model

There are three versions of the Stiletto plus one more by Tom Dixon called the Stiletto XL. Two were kitted by Mathis & Peadon in Texas about 1977. I have two of each kit, plus a Stiletto 660 kit. I have four different sets of plans. Again, enough to drive you crazy when looking for "the" Stiletto or "the" Argus or "the" Ares, etc.

Is this Classic legal?

I am aware of only two basic shapes of the Stiletto: the 35 and the 660.

Well, the 660 is a Les McDonald design and the XL is a Tom Dixon version and they are not quite the same. The two kit version had different rudders, different airfoils though the same chord and span and area. Other minor differences too. For 10.00 to cover printing at Kinkso and mailing, I can send you the two plans so you can see the differences. Push comes to shove, do the 660 with an ST .46 or and OS LA. 46.

Thank you Ty for the offer. I have enough plans to last me a while. I already have a 35 version ready to be built. I will have it poered by a Brodak 40. If I need more power , LA46 is a direct plugin.

I think with a larger version, one would need at least a modern .50 for power.

I think maybe you miss understood. After looking at the plans I think what Ty said was that the 35 Stiletto and the 660 Stiletto have the same wing span and the same cord only the 660 has a different airfoil and rudder. You actually refered to the 660 as the larger version which is really not the case. I think if you were to look at the 660 you might be happier with the thicker airfoil especially if you are considering using the LA 46, which would probably be the better choice in a plane of this size anyway..... Ty, correct me if I'm wrong

At least on the plans I have, there is some difference in wing span and flap size. Did not look too hard at the thickness of the wing though. It took a while to find these differences.

I built that exact model off the same plans only I shortened the height of the rudder a little bit
