small ship, engine and lines...

What would be the smallest combo that would be still able to do the pattern?

like, 35 - 40 feet on a .049 on a light built up wing ship, would that be OK?

I was thinking of a combo that would be used in a parking lot or a small ares.

any ideas?

It would be nice to have a plane/flying equipment that would be easy to carry and, for instance, use in the summer house on the mountains.

There are some lawns over there, but not big enough for 60' lines.

Find the plans to the 1/2A Snapper (105 sq.in.) and build it with a C*x RTF engine and a balloon tank. (Actually, if you can find one, a Holland Wasp is the authentic and ideal engine). Flying on 35' of .008 cable or solids, it will do a perfectly nice pattern. I have scored in the 350s with that combination.

For more accessable stuff, the Brodak Baby Flite Streak and a Norvel Big Mig .049 is fab. You should be able to fly on 38' to 45' of line. Keep the weight under 6 ounces.

Or... Use a Tee Dee .010 and build a 3/32" sheet wing model of about 90 sq.in. and run it off a pressure bladder. Should be good on 20 to 25' of line. Just copy the 3-view of any stunter you like!

I had a Snapper way back when built from the kit and powered by an Atwood Shriek. Best flying 1/2 A I have ever flown. Seemed big back then compared to the Scientific logs and other 1/2 A kits. What would you think one built from scratch would fly like with a TD .020?

I originally powered mine with a TD .020 before I got a Wasp. I had difficulty getting a good engine run and was horribly tail heavy even though the plane weighed under 4 ounces. I lengthened the nose 3/4 inch, and added the Wasp and had a winner.

Also, my fuselage was all 1/32" sheet with 1/32" ply doublers. Super light wood everywhere, holes drilled in the spars, Litespan covering, 2 coats clear dope then one of clear epoxy on the fuselage and tail. I like lots of nitro...

I LOVE that design. The TD would have plenty of power if you can get a consistent run.

No problem with the run, just use a bladder or pacifier.

There was thread here on 1/2a stunters that listed a lot of planes in that would fit your needs.
Probably any plane under 200sq inches with a good TD or Norvel 049, PAW .8cc diesel, maybe the .55cc if built light. This would mean a plane with around a 29"(736mm) wingspan and chord of around 7"(178mm). Should be able to fly any of these on 35 to 45 ft(10.5 to 13.5 M)lines.

With the help of Bill Nezteband, Randall Hopkins and John Lowry, I put together a combination which seems to fly well. This combo is Bill's smallest 1/2A Doodlebug plus a Fox FAI built by Randall Hopkins of Paducah, Kentucky(270-554-3359). Randall and his former friend Dick purchased all of the Fox .049 parts at the factory and Randall is building the Foxes from new parts. Dick passed away a few years ago but Randall keeps the thing going.

Randall builds the Foxes to order and can do the regular .049 or the FAI more powerful version. He sells a lot of them to nostalgia free flighters and the flyers doing the Walt Musciano contest in Virginia. Tank has been the only combination problem so far. Am working on that to take it to the Nats next year in Muncie. Hope someone will run 1/2 A.
