fox 35 muffler

i have 3 fox 35s 40th aniversery edition they have the muffler lugs shaved off i would like to use a tounge muffler on them but it will need a strap and a way to center them on the exhaust port where can i get them or is there something else i can use i want to use 1 in a viking im building and thinking about useing 1 in the arfnobler.

Brad: We make strap ons galore for Fox Stunts here in Michigan. We make no attempt to center them.

Just make the tongue, make the strap and its attaching holes, and literally strap it on. Works fine.

Or order one from our fine host, Leonard. He sells Big Art Adamisin mufflers that fit the Fox 35 and a bunch of other engines, and I can tell you they're nice!

On my older Fox .35s without lugs, I use long pieces of all thread that is 4-40. Bend it carefully around the head, slide on the muffler and then cut it to length. I use the nylok type 4-40 bolts on them. Or you could use a bicycle spoke and modify it to go through the muffler and around the engines head. One end of course will have threads, and the other could be threaded or just bent so it will not go through the muffler. Or order new crankcases from Fox.

Brad - one thing to keep in mind whenever you strap around the case with a muff strap is that the case must absorb the forces of the crimping you're putting on it with the hose clamp or muffler strapping arrangement. This is a force that was not intended and can/will slightly distort the case if you pull things too tight with the clamps. I runied an older Enya .35 that exact way through my own ignorance; scuffed heck out of the piston/cylinder walls. Just passing on some info here. Your call.

You are correct on the potential stress, however the way the ears were made on the 40th anniversary fox places even more stress on the case and distorts the thin sleeve easier. Just tighten the strap enough to hold the muffler solidly in place, using a jewelers type screwdriver helps limit how tight you get the strap.

One other thing.

I use and old lug-less 35 stunt, and you can over tighten them. After loosing 3 RMS mufflers in the long grass (the fox just shakes them off), I also run safety wire around the head and muffler in case the bolts shake loose.

The safety wire is a leash so it does not fall off the airplane, not attach it to the stack.

I have tried the following and all seem to work

I've used a spring that you can wrap around and hold the two bolts together. Works fine but the spring eventually loses tension from being heated and reheated from engine runs.
I've also use the hose clamps you can get at the automotive store. they work great but you do have to have some tin snips and some metal working skill to bend the flanges where the bolts mount.
I've JB welded some brall tube to the sides of the exhaust stack. This is the cleanest appproach of all but you do have to scuff up and clean the exhaust sides, the tubes, and just about everything else to make sure you have good contact. Use the muffler and it's bolts to hold the tubes in place while the jbweld sets. Clean up the jbweld with a file after your done and it looks pretty professional.

Agree with Phantom; strap pressures have not been an issue.

What we do in Michigan...we simply strap the muffler on with (trumpets, drumrolls) package straping material. You know, that cheap blued stuff that is about a half inch wide, and kind of thin.

Cut two pieces to length.

Attach to both sides of tongue with little 4-40 screws.

Wrap both ends around the case.

Attach ends with a longer 4-40.

That's it...And you can cinch down the 4-40 pretty well without distorting that manly Fox Stunt case, too.
