Got a Magnum 36 for Christmas.
It was 72 here today so we decided to try it out.

1959 Ares (that has had an OS32 mainly)
Used a Bolly 3 blade 10.5 X 4
Ran around 11,000 or so RPM
SIG 5% fuel really seemed to work best
Lap times around 5.1 or so which is good for the plane
Tongue or Chip muffler

REALLY REALLY REALLY like it so far, runs very consistent and really brings the ares to life (this is a plane i have flown and won or placed in every contest except 1 with)

Anyway great motor look forward to learning more about it.

Aaron is telling the truth. Box stock with venturi, .255, and Aero products NVA. Put about 35 min on the bench, and flew it on Sig 5% nitro, 20% oil, Bolly 10 1/2 X 4 3 bld. The engine really did make the Ares a much better flyer. Ran in a steady wet 2 cycle for the entire flights. Just a tiny bit of rpm increase when the nose comes up, but almost like there is a govenor on it. Reminds you of a 40VF on a pipe.
Special thanks to Phil G. for the info and to Brett for posting the thread on how to set the Magnum up!

Scott, I don't know what mufflers are available but the OS32/FSR/FX and the TT36 and the Magnum 36 old style have the same bolt pattern for a muffler. I use the tongue mufflers that Leonard sells.

Hi Bill and Aaron, Was this engine reworked or just bought and added to? Who's venturi and NV assembly? How many head gaskets etc.? Am most interested in your good fortune and comments! Happy New Year! Phil Spillman

Phil, Scott, Dennis, Richard, et.al.,

It is a "box stock" engine, straight from Hobby People. Set up as Phil GRanderson said to, and as was posted by Brettt here a month or so ago. Nothing done to it but put in a venturi and nva. And a half hour or so bench time.

The venturi was a new .255, or so, one that I got from Randy Smith for the OS 32. I also used a aero products NVA.

Prop is Bolly 101/2 3 blade pitched on a prather gauge to 4. We started with a Bolly 10X4 2 blade, but the 3 blade works much better for us in this plane. 10,800 to 11,000 ("spits" just a bit at this rpm) launch and 5.2 second laps on 62' eye to eye 015's. The needle can open a hair, and he can fly 5.4 on this set up with authority (yesterday was 72 deg, and gusty about 12-15 mph) which wasn't possible in anything but perfect air with the OS 32F.

The tongue muffler was one that we had, fits the os 32, fp40, fox 35, webra 32, etc., etc., so I don't know where it came from, but it works great. The DS 40 tongue will work also, and the same tube mufflers, but we haven't tried a tube muffler on it, yet.

Seems the parts (nva, venturi, muffler) are the same as the OS 32F we had been usinfg in this plane, but this Magnum really puts out more than the OS 32F!

It deserves repetition:

>It is a "box stock"

>GRanderson said to.

The need to "fix" things as a reflex action is a really bad habit. Phil knew enough not to fiddle until it needed fiddling. There's nothing particularly magic about this engine as opposed to others, other than Phil actually ran it as it came first and didn't immediately try to cram it into a predetermined mold.

Hi guys You are talking about a Bolly 10.5 by 4 3 three blade . Where do you get that item. Its not listed in Bolly or aero products. Are you sure you dont refer to the Bill Lee prop? REally want to know cause om now finishing a plane with one of those engines (on a pipe) . Keith Varley

The prop is a 10.5 X 6.25 (i think) it seems to me that one almost has to re-pitch any prop to be used for competition...

I really like it and i think that as it gets a little more "broken in" it will run that much better.

The thing i noticed was that on 10% it ran ok but really liked 5% (Sig Champion). Possibly the lower nitro was alowing the engine to heat up more and maintain the heat better. I don't know but it liked it.
