ST .46

For what price should this one sell. The reserve seems a bit high to me.

Old Sourdough, there is no way of telling with Rucina2001. As a general rule he always wants big bucks for his engines. I would make a guess his reserve was at $200 since the last few new ST 46 engines brought that kinda of EBAY ridiculous prices. The last one sold for $235 bucks. Might as well buy a PA or Rojett at that point.

I agree, I once was high bidder on a Fox 29R, when he ended the auction early, said he had sold it locally. Since I don't use paypal
I won't bid, but a reserve of 200.00 is probably likely. Unless you need or want a .46, a PA. 40 is a very nice engine, comes in S.E.

$175.00 should be tops for these. People say they are rare, but new ones keep popping up. I have two new in the box and paid less than $125.00 for them. I remember when one ST .46 by Big Jim went for 376.xx. I hope the winner choked on it. Ha.

I quit doing anything on E-bay. It just got to the point that it seemed like there were too many people with more money in their pockets than sense and too many sellers than thought their stuff was worth a fortune. You can have E-bay and all that is on it!

HI Jim. You got that right, but every now and then I get in and find a jewel at low cost. The thing that makes me laugh is they sell new in the box Brodak kits with a starting price at or near the list in the catalog. They sell for much more after 5 days. List plus the 5.50 standard postage from Brodaks is much less than $bay. Plus the fact that several on line hobby shops sell them at discount.
It's the rare and old stuff I go for, very seldom anything new.

RUCINA2001 always seems to list with a very high reserve and then relists with a more sensible reserve.

A NIB OS Max 1 35 did not meet it's reserve at $224!

The MAX-1 relisted only got to $191 - reserve still not met!

Just out of interest he's still trying to sell that OS MAX-1 and each time he relists the people who bid before drop out so it just keeps not meeting it's reserve by a larger amount!

This guy must have bought this at top dollar....

It's at $166 right now. True, he should be getting close to the reserve.

The reserve may be a little high for this motor, but not terribly so.

By the way, this is my good ebay customer Rudy, who is in Japan. He has bought a number of my engines at a full ebay price without a whimper. Granted, I don't put reserves on my own motors.

Here is something to be carefull of on ST/40-46's.I was a rebuilder of ST/40-46's for many years and did hundred's of them. Here is a problem I started to see a few years ago. People would give me new in the box and mint motors that they had bought on ebay. The motors looked brand new had great compression but when they ran them they soon lost compression and were hard to start.Here is what I found, these motors had rusted rings and the wrist pin had frozen to the piston. Not tight but frozen. Also most has rusted bearings. Unless you know these motors very well and you can hold it in your hand I would not buy it. Most used motors that have been run in the last five years are ok. This motor on ebay has the wide dust cover making it at least 25 years old.

I wanted to treat myself to a couple of Supertigres, both the .46 and the V.60 that you hear so much about as being a 'classic' stunt engine. So I bid on a couple on ebay a few years back before the prices got way out of hand.

They were all very used--if at all. But I figured that If I even bother, I may as well make sure I'm going to have a good engine after investing in the legend.

So, as a could afford it, I sent each one of mine out to Tom Lay for his fine-tuning and rework. This on the theory that even a 'New in Box" engine that had lain around with the factory oil congealing for 30 years needed to be looked at carefully before being broken in.

Sure enough, one of the ones I bought --specifically advertised as "New in Box"-- from a guy on ebay came back with a note from Tom saying it had been run at some time in its career, and that it was a good thing he'd had a chance to rebuild it before I tried to do anything with it.

It also came back with an new piston ring, all the gentle finesse Tom puts into an engine and I now know I have a really 'new' engine to break in and enjoy.

I'd recommend anyone investing a hunk of change in a Super Tigre for the classic stunt run (meaning you are buying to fly it) to just take the box you get and send it to Tom or whomever you wish and have them go through the process of insuring it's really ready to run.

There is just no telling what's gone on inside an engine, regardless of how it looks.
