ST 46 3 blade & Spinner

Hi all,

As some of you may have noticed I am building a Skylark with a Super Tigre 46 for Classic. I am thinking I would like to run a 3 blade prop with a classic needle nose spinner.

The question is what props and spinners are currently available. I looked at Bollys on Tom's site and it looks like the only thing close might be the 11.25 x 6.5. Anyone have any experience with this prop on a ST 46? Will it need to be re-pitched to "6".

Any other ideas on prop and spinner?

Tom's site? I thought Randy sold Bollys.

I have run the 11.25-6.5, and I did indeed run it down to 6. It was not nearly as good as the 12-6 2-blade, or the various Rev-Up 2-blade 12-6, 13-6 and 13-5 modifications I had. This *is* a case where more efficiency helps, and you don't necessarily have far more power than you need. And other arguments aside, diameter does indeed generally improve efficiency. But there's only one way to find out if it's a good tradeoff.

Randy sells 3-blade spinners, and you can order them from Tru-Turn.

Tom Dixon does carry some Bolly props. I just got two 10 1/2 X 6 1/2 3 blades from him. He also has Dave Brown 3 bld. spinners (look like the Tru Turn).

Randy Smith has the 3 blade spinners in a Veco clone both "Classic" and Needle Nose in 2 inch. 1 3/4 inch, also, in the needle nose.

Ya I really meant "Randy's site", was communicating with Tom Lay via email and had a brain fa*t.

Randy doesn't list an 11-5 3 blade, didn't think to ask Tom Lay about props. I may have to re-think this and see if I can get enough ground clearance for a 12 inch 2 blade. Couldn't get away with less than two of the Bolly's and not sure I need to have $80+ bucks tied up in props for what isn't going to be my main stunter.

I know Tom Lay, in the past and now too, I guess, has Eather props.
Could be an Eather he is talking about for the 11-5 on the 46.(??)

I've got two ST.46's being prepared by Tom Lay now.

One will be for the SMP Skylark kit (the other for a Stilletto 660) and I asked Tom what the best prop he would recommend for the ST .46/Skylark combination.

His response:

11x 5 1/2, 3-blade sq.tip., non-undercambered is good for the .46.
They are $45 +5 for box, and priority shipping.

So, I cranked up an order to Tom Lay for the 11 X 5 1/2 three-bladed prop he had recommended by email in response to my query about what would be good for my ST .46 in the SMP Skylark and sent it out.

The other day I got back a wonderful carbon fiber three bladed prop, thick airfoil, square tips with a little bevel to flip the vortex out of the prop disd and a note.

Seems he had contacted members of the Tucson Stunt Mafia and determined that 11 X 5 3/4 was a better choice for the altitude out here in the desert, so he tweaked my order by 1/4 pitch on the fly and sent me the best prop for the job.

Is that thoughtful service or what?

I always used an 11x5 3 blade Bolly (don't know if they are still avilable) and, of course, the ever popular PW prop: 11.3x5.25 2 blade Zinger.

Didn't know that, I love Leonard to death for what he has done with this board but almost every time I have emailed him about buying something I never seem to get a timely reply so I quit asking...

Windy has the nice std. and needle nose spinners in 1.75" and 2.0". He said he would have 2.25" and 2.5" in needle nose by this time, but I haven't checked back. He offers them in both 2 and 3 blade. My impression was that he was going to be getting these made himself, not getting them from Randy. Price is the same or close enough, service good.

Bob, I don't know how come you have trouble communicating with Leonard. I don't have a problem, and his service has been quite speedy. Sometimes he has to wait for mufflers from BA or props, etc., from Randy or Brodak. I even got one of those SSW tuned engines, no problem, arranged by email. Just my experience. Steve

Don't rule out the Rev-Up 111/5 x 6. I have used the bolly 111/4x61/4
3 blade with very good results. Randy's spinners are very good as are tru-turns.

My Skylark ended up very noseheavy with a Tigre 46 and a Veco 2 inch needle nose with a 3/4 inch extention. I was even using a wooden prop. Eventually it ended up with a plastic spinner, tongue muffler and a wood Rev Up 11x5 prop, and a bunch of lead in the tail. Good luck, it is a nice flying model.
