Dope color question...

Hi guys,

This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway...

I've been working on paint designs for my new Legacy and would like to do a scheme with dark metallic green and dark metallic blue over white. (First attachment, the larger areas would be green.)

My question is about the availability of a dark green metallic dope. I think SIG has a metallic green but I haven't seen any swatches or anything. I would like it to be about the same as the metallic green Money Cote on the Akro in the second pic, or just a bit darker.

Does anyone know of such an animal? Brodak perhaps?

Edit: I was thinking that Brodak's B-25 Silver (over regular silver), with blue ink or green ink added, might do just what you want. Wouldn't cost a lot to experiment with it. Dang, that's gonna be pretty, in Seahawk colors. Ooops! Maybe burnished gold leaf on the Numeral 7's?

Wow Steve, you must be a mind reader - I've already got the gold leaf and have been exprerimenting with it for the past week or so! I'm going to use it on the "7"s and maybe for a name on the cowl like a race plane.

I like the silver with ink added idea. Gonna have to give it a try I think.

And nah, no checkers...

Brodak has a Piper Metalic Green and a Newport Metalic Blue. No guarantees that they are "dark enough", but they should do.

I went to buy paint for my new plane today at the autopaint store. Whew! I was considering some pearlcoat stuff, but you can only get it in the top line Ditzler paint (I imagine DuPont has it, too). I had a color scheme worked out using a pearl frost white as the main color with blue, red and gold trim. But at $76.20 a pint for the red and $47.50 for blue; don't even ask what the Orion Pearl Metallic Yellow (sort of a yellowy gold pearl tri-color) was going to cost. I about fainted. $275 to buy paint just seemed a little off the edge to me. At least the white wasn't totally horrible. It was "only" about $37...for a pint.

I told the guy I was going to re-think my color scheme.

If you will go to your local news stand and look through the model car mags, you will find listings for people that sell what you want in small quantities. Flakes and pearls you can add to whatever you have on hand. Someone at work told me about a guy in Texas that sells the stuff in small quantities that we can afford.

Randy, you will remember Scott Urabe from Salinas. He had a bizarre looking new stunter at NW CL Regionals last year, called the NINJA. Pearl white. He said it was a powder he poured into clear dope, Acrylic, I think. Can't be that much, can it? Call him up!

I've already found a way to do what I want. There are some independent car paint makes that will mix what you want for considerably less than Ditzler or DuPont want. And pretty high quality. I found a place in So. Cal. that sells House of Color paints to order. pretty much anything you want and at prices that are much less than I was quoted for a quart.

We'll see what I come up with. Mayby I'll just go a simple red and white.

Well, Leonard is working on a Magnum .46 GPA for me (How's it coming Len? ) and I was going to put that in the Legacy, but I just picked up an ST .60 from Bill Morell and might use that instead. Not sure which yet. I'm going to be starting on a Strega soon and want to put the ST in that for sure.

Of course a friend just gave me a set of plans for Adamusko's Spitfire too...

Yeah. I went to buy pearlescent colors once and left with nice opacques instead. Over $130 for a pearl white pint by the time you get reducer and you still need clearcoat.

I love the nose on the plane, intake, raised cowl for the rocker boxes, the exhaust stacks. Kinda like a "Bill Barnes" plane for the old Air Trails. Neat. Yes, two tones of blue plus white would be a natural.

Check with Ron King [email protected] He mixed his own metallics this past summer and they really came out well.

Get an Aircraft Spruce & Specialty catalog, they are located in Corona, CA and have a website. They carry a full line of Randolph dopes, and Randolph makes a huge variety of colors. Aircraft Spruce is a supplier of materials for building and repairing full-size airplanes.

Randolph dopes are fully compatible with other butyrates such as Sig, and are well-pigmented, and have a full line of thinners, retarders, etc. High quality stuff. I have used Randolph products for years on full-size airplanes and my models. The only caveat is that Randolph does not have the glow fuel resistance that Sig does so I always use Sig light coat for the final application of clear.

The prices of Randolph are much less than dopes made specifically for model airplane use. Aircraft Spruce ships and has locations in California and Georgia. If you live near either of those locations you can go in to their will-call department and pick up your order.
