New Concept on Nobler Arf

I know there are many threads on the new Arfs but I thought this might be one of interest. A guy at our flying field in Reno showed up with this Arf Nobler. This has many changes, from recovering total airframe, new adjustable control system, motor mount modifications plus (moving engine back) and best of all detachable wing for transporting. The detachable wing is an interesting concept for controline stunt planes. The plane is powered with an FP 40 with one extra head gasket, and weighs 38 ozs. The wing is attached with 2 bolts from underneath. The pilot Jeff Martin got the idea from all his past experience from his RC days. The plane flys great on 68 ft lines considering the thin air we have here.

This makes perfect sense to me and many RC guys are comfortable with this type of wing mounting.

You would be amazed at how small the bolts attaching wing to fuselage can be, although I assume this fellow simply used 10-24 nylon bolts. I once had a 62-ounce PA model, wing held into fuselage with four (4) stainless 4-40 cap screws, two at the front, two at the rear.

Yup, absolutely perfect sense. When I obtain one I will do exactly the same thing! It's kinda hard transporting more than one model in a Nissan Altima - so I guess you could call it a necessity on my part.

Somehow I don't think you will be scoring very well on SSF test presented in current issue of Stunt News.

Just one comment. The Nobler Arf comes with a 2 bolt "alignment" scheme. I simply used that as my attachment method. I wasn't (and still am not) convinced that the gluing method suggested by Top Flite really bought that much more strength. See the Nobler Arf Review on the Review Forum.

I don't actually remove the wing on a regular basis - it still is a slight pain to remove the canopy to take the elevator link off.
