Brodak's 38 Special Suggestions?

I was reading the "Flying Fool" thread and Ron brought up
the question if anyone has input on building and or flying
one of these guys.
I've always liked this one, what's your opinion?

I built one last year and it flies like a dream.

This is a simple to build bipe and looks great too. I have nothing but good comments for the kit and the plane.

I had a LA 46 on it with an 11x6 and that was WAAAAY too hot for it...toned it down with an LA 40 and an 11x3. Seems a lot better with that on it. Would fly great with a 35-S or similar too I think.

I had one given to me a while back-sorta ugly and heavy as lead. Anyway I flew it a little and it was pretty decent, full pattern capable in moderate winds with good tension everywhere. Power was a Stuka Stunt OS 40FP profile special, 12-5 Rev Up, 62 feet or so of .015's. This is a lot of power but I actually felt it was pretty comfortable and would have struggled with less. Weight was unknown but was very, very heavy.
I gave it away to a new guy and don't miss it.

A few notes that may be of Interest,

The 38 Special and the Dancing Girl have the exact same wings and moments.

The Dancing Girl needs a strong 40, I don't think anyone would be happy with a Fox or Max 35.

The Dancing girl will fly the pattern but it isn't a PA ship.

It actually glides pretty good but lands like a heavy Ringmaster.

A bunch of fun and always an attention getter...

The other obvious difference between the two planes is the Dancing Girl's built up fuselage. Esthetically, I find the Dancing Girl a bit more pleasing, both for the difference in the nose's most forward shape as well as the fact that I prefer (personal!!) an open cockpit as well as the lack of razor or a "fast" back on this type of plane. The profile view is the main reason that I prefer the Dancing Girl to the same designer's Cavalier and Cavalier Mk IV.

Jimmy Damerell won Expert Profile with his...they really fly well. He powered his with an ST .46.
He also flew it in several PAMPA Expert events, doing well there, too. He is a terrific flyer, but the airplane is sound, too.

Owen Richards scaled one up for a DoubleStar60!!! He flew it a few times and it looked great in the air, wonderful looking turn, like a big PA ship, got sidelined for other projects, I think he needed the engine for his Avanti. I'd be tempted to build a big one like his just from watching his fly.

I have not seen it fly, of course, but I understand that Nils has one that he flys well and enjoys completely. Due to an accident, his now has a built up fuselage, though. I've forgotten the power he used (uses).

Maybe he'll chime in here this evening.

Hi Paul, I got one of these from a friend who was leaving the hobby. I mounted an LA .40 on it and have had many happy hours of fun flying it. It will do the entire pattern much better than it should! I have tried a Mac's tuned muffler on it and it too worked quite well. On one occasion I felt like pushing the envelope and performed several square vertical eights in succession with the little bipe! It's a great way to kick back and have fun flying!

I have one powered with a Fox 40bb.
Great plane and probably a little heavy but I fly fast so it isn't a problem.
I really need to get some more time on it but I've built quite a lot in the last 3 years and it's a tough choice anymore when I go flying. Always the new one to try.That will never make me really good but I surely am having fun. Dennis
