KenHi Cougar

I'm looking at this as a possiblity for Classic.
What's the verdict?

Hi Robert,
I have seen the pics of a couple of these at VSC. I really like the looks of the plane. I think they fly pretty good from all accounts.
What power are you thinking of using?

I'm on my third cougar. All I got to do is tissue and paint. SUPER plane. WAY over looked.

Good one. I have the last Midwest version, with a Lightning Bolt McCoy 40.

Were these the same Cougars that were kitted by Midwest (I think)? I also liked the Panther in that group.

Anyone have some pictures of either or both?

Depends on which Cougar. There were at least 3 versions the last of which was a Midwest redesign of Kenhi's second version. Got that? The first was a completely different airplane with full thickness built up flaps, not bad looking but not good flying. The second was the sleek beauty we all know and love but it has a VERY thin airfoil, nearly just a flat section at the tips. The Midwest I think would be the best of the lot. Midwest retained the good looks, it takes a good eye to tell the difference except for the airfoil which is truely an airfoil with a nice round LE. I haven't built the Midwest version but I have the Kenhi 2nd version. It was so-so as far as flying, much like the Panther of the same series. Midwest also redesigned that but lost allot of its asthetic appeal. I love both of these airplanes and plan to build a new Midwest Cougar soon.

Here's a shot of my Kenhi version powered with a Veco .35 TCC that eventually brought about the model's demise. Sorry about the picture quality. Way before digital and I ain't no photo snapper. It was done in silkspan and dope color K&B Superpoxy. About 40 oz if I remember right.

Opps...... I was thinking of the Panther! LOL!!
My flying buddy, as a kid, had a Midwest Cougar that we wore completely out!

OK, new missive!

The Kenhi Panther was a beautiful model, but suffered a horrible airfoil, thin and sharp. I managed to fly 480's with mine but that was probable about its limit when combined with my less then pretty flying. The Midwest version I'm sure is a better performer but it lost allot in the "Look-at-me" rating when they did the redesign.

Here's a shot of my scratch built Kenhi with Fox .35, 32 oz with silkspan and dope color topped off with Hobby Poxy clear. I crashed this model a Brodak's a few years ago in high winds. It still hangs in its place, just can't part with it.

These are both the Midwest Panthers. The Kenhi has a more sharply swept leading edge and shorter tail moment. IMO it really effects the looks of the model. But having seen them fly the pperformance is improved.

Nice photos. I notice the last one has some different focus patches on the grass areas. Did you touch out something?

The jpeg algorithm looks for transition lines and when it finds them narrows up its block size so that diagonal lines and fine detail don't get lost while large, roughly similar areas can get higher compression. So the amount of compression varies in different areas of the image. The more little transitions you have to preserve, the bigger the file. And the less you try to preserve, the more noticable the jpeg block artifacts are.

Well, the bright grass blades is nothing but high density information that is useless for our purposes.

So I get out the blur tool and blrr the area around the airplane so I can use a higher quality Jpeg compression setting and bring out the detail of the airplane and not include all the detailed info for the grass blades.

I'm just buying back a little file size at a higher fidelity.

Is it a distracting effect?
