I need advise in building a website. Nothing fancy but would like get my own domain name and enough bandwith for 10 to 20 pictures and some writing. Any help is appreciated. (Hey, is 75 today in South Florida).

The big question is how much you know about html, etc. You can do it simple, like I have mine, or use a program like either Front Page or Dreamweaver. I have the latest of Front Page, but earlier versions are available on e-bay and don't cost that much. It is easier to do with one of these programs.

As to providers, etc. some will give you the domain name free these days if you sign up for a year. I have already paid in advance for mine for five years just so I don't goof and lose it, and it also gives more flexibility. If you are not concerned about the domain name, most of the internet providers will give you some space. Otherwise, send me an e-mail and I will give some suggestions from what I have found. Don't want to take up a lot of space here for extraneous (non airplane related) stuff.

I think that it's about time the Stunt Commuity got turned on to blogging.

A blog (contraction for Web Log) is a kind of personal diary/archive/web page where one can chronicle the construction of an airplane, a contest season, etc. put up images, notes, documentation and opinion and links to other websites.

Blogs get used for all kinds of things, but they have in common the distillation of one person's perspective and experience into a running web commentary.

One thing blogs have in common is that they are based on using the web browser as an authoring system and hence (once set up) are about as complicated to maintain as it is to post on this board.

As always, ask Mr. Goggle what he knows about "free Blog software download" and you will get a list of recommended further reading.

As in my recommendations for free Windoze photo editing software, if all the concerned members decided on the same package, you could help each other up the learning curve.

Great - imagine having a couple dozen websites to visit each day, instead of two or so...

I think this site and FlightLines are a sort-of "multi-blog", which is probably a lot more interesting than very many of us could manage on our own...

I will never be mistaken as someone who knows a lot about computers. However even I was able to make a simple website for our club through America OnLine. I know some people look down on AOL, but it works fine for me, my wife & kids. Membership allows use of a certain amount of FTP space, as I'm sure most other ISPs do.

So until a computer expert volunteers to create a web presence for us, AOL's included software lets me make a basic, easy website for announcing meetings, providing club officer contacts, field rules, etc.

Even Greater -- imagine all of the personal flaming and off topic stuff on sites of their own.

Or Imagine a coherent, complete collection of all of Al Rabe's outstanding information in one place, with no ugly fringe of pond scum mucking up the works.

Guys ask about how to do their own web page--an inevitable progression.

I'm just mentioning a good tool.

Actually, if folks started using blogs, they would end up using RSS and then you would not have to visit--you could subscribe to channels of interest and find out when something new is posted.

For my thumbnail pages:

1. I scan in the pages using my HP PSC 900 scanner and the software supplied with it – the aim is to scan in at a DPI (I find 100 best) that is as close as possible to the final size required. I go for 950 pixels/9.5”/23.5 cms maximum size which is a slight reduction at 100 DPI. Scans do not need to be in colour for my old articles. I scan them as jpegs.
2. I use a piece of freeware called CATALOGUE WIZARD to generate the thumbnails pages.
3. I use a piece of freeware called FTP COMMANDER to load the pages to my site.

The main pictures and main screen html are there and the thumbnails and html for each picture are in cwdata – ignore art-c. You can also see the sizes of the files.

My computer came with a piece of software called Frontpage Express which allowed me to produce this withou too much hassle:
