ARF Nobler and Monoline

Those who were at Whittier Narrows last weekend perhaps saw a first. Dale and Joe Kirn were out with a just finished ARF Nobler and a Fox 35. And it had a monoline unit in it. Many of us have seen Joe fly through the pattern before with his Thunderbird. But I think this is a first for the ARF Nobler. First flight was uneventful, sort of. The engine was more than a bit rich. Lap times were about 7 seconds. Lines were at least 70 feet. There was a slight breeze, less than 5 MPH. Nevertheless, Joe did loops with this thing UPWIND!! As the flight went on, the engine leaned out somewhat and Joe did a few basic loops and eights. A couple more flights showed that there were some tank problems to get a consistent run through the whole flight. They were back today for another flight. It still seems that the engine/tank problems need to be sorted out.

I will try to report more when there is more to report.

Very cool stuff, Keith!! I imagine that most on this forum have never seen monoline stunt, and may not know of the startling line lengths possible. Stories from the 1950's include many tales of flying with line longer than 150'. Boy, I wish I had witnessed that!

I seem to remember an award offered by Stanzel to anyone winning stunt at the Nats with monoline. Maybe you could remind us all of the exact details.

I asked Dale Kirn last week when we were watching Joe if the Stanzel offer of $1,000 for a stunt win at the Nats with monoline was still open. Dale said that it was. Interesting, because there was no age category limitation when the offer was made, so a Junior or Senior flyer could win the prize. I have no idea if the skill categories flown at the Nats would qualify or not. I doubt it since the skill categories are not official Nats events.

I do know that when the offer was first made, there were some people who seriously put some equipment together to see if the idea was feasable.

Bill - The original deal was that anyone placing 1st in C/L stunt using Monoline would win a $1000 prize from Stanzel (I think).

This was originally offered in 1961, I think. Adjusted for inflation it should now be $42,000 ! Joking!

Joe put up a very respectable OTS score flying a Jamison Special monoline at the VSC in 2000.
