2004 Event Calendar

Where can I find stunt events listing for this year? Please point me in the right direction. Last year I kept finding out about event dates from people I flew with. I felt like a dumbell asking "Eh, any contests coming up?"

You could volunteer to run the contest calendar for Stunt News. It would be some work, but then again you would always be among the first to know what contests are to be where.

You could ring Dave Cook's bell; he is your District Director for PAMPA and these sorts of folk are good for not much more than providing the very type of information you need. (Easily said as I bailed on this responsibility last year.) Do tell Dave Hello! for me.

You could subscribe to every single local newsletter within a two-day drive of your house.

Hmmm, what's to prevent the establishment and maintenance of a dedicated contest calendar on this site? Again, you are chosen to be the "volunteer."

What about Stunt News? Do people send upcoming event info to Tom?
Rich Peabody has posted event calendar for northeast. What about other districts?

No word on ribs but I finally got video's from Windy: Northampton and Palisades Park contests! One thing that sucks about contests is that I stay in my ciricle during the contest and get ready for my flight. I don't get a chance to see others fly. These videos are a way to compensate for that.

I think an events page or contest calendar or something would be a nice addition to Stunt News.

Dan, how could you not know of the SSW Events Forum? I gotta say, if folks continue to NOT put the geographical AREA and DATE in the SUBJECT LINE, nobody is likely to read their post. It's so obvious, I don't understand why they don't consider that. WHEN AND WHERE in the Subject Line. What, Who and other details in the text. End rant.

I betcha Stephen could volunteer to run one of the club websites, and take care of the whole enchilada. I feel that a website is far better for contest schedules...easy to fix, changes aren't laying around misleading folks, etc. On the other hand, not everybody is online. But still, you (Dan) can always go online at the local library, at work, or visit your neighbor/buddy.

This last month, I contacted all the local CD's and club officers I knew of, and suggested that we use our club website's Events Page as a scratchpad. Everybody can look at the dates available, send me an email, and get their event on the Pacific NW's CL Schedule in a matter of minutes or hours. When it's all worked out, John Thompson can put the dates on his website, or just link to ours. In fact, all the clubs in the area can simply put the link below on their website for contest dates. Click on it, and go straight to the Events Page. I guess I could post this link in the SSW Events Forum. The only issue is how reliable our server is (great, so far!). It would still be good to have some backup, like JT's website. I'd bet that most clubs have a website by now, and this may be a really good way to use the SSW Events Forum; just post a direct link to your club's Events Page.

I arbitrarily put a 14 or 15 hour/1 day drive (for me) as my standard as to what I'll generally put in the website. That included Salt Lake City, Fresno, maybe San Jose. Edmondton will be a challenge, but I plan to try it, sometime. Canonball Run! Exceptions are made for VSC, NATS, WC. I'll put any CL event, within that radius, on the events schedule. So far, not getting much info out of Canada or Oregon. I'm still scratching my head over the rumored Canadian NATS in BC.

I think making SSWF is an excellent medium to meet fellow pilots, learn the tricks and generally discuss all things stunt. Never before was there a way for such a geographically diverse group of people get together and shoot the breeze.

The forum is so successfull at being a meeting place for pilots, we tried to make it do other things like calendar. Forum software is not designed to keep calendars. A more generic website would be more appropriate. Besides, Leonard already has his hands full.

Another item that I think is missing is online directory of stunt resources. Phil Brown's list has not been updated in years.

OK, while we are talking the subject, as several have pointed out, there is an events forum here. What you all need to do is bookmark the entry page to the lobby of the forum so that you have access to the individual forums, not just the main forum.

Now, I have been talking about the update to the software for nearly a year. The new php version has gone through several debugging sessions and I haven't wanted to switch over until it was truly ready. But this will have an actual calendar attached to it to which everyone can add their own specific events (month by month just like a "real" calendar). We can put the name of the event on the date, but will need to put the specifics in the events forum.

Now, as to the Events forum which does exist on this site, I do indeed need you to put your place and date on the subject heading. Then put specifics in the text body. But this is not a links page, so just putting individual links to multiple sites around the country isn't going to accomplish anything. Links fall to the bottom and don't tell us anything. I delete everything that is past, and, as far as I am concerned, a link is past.

Now it would be possible to put a link page on this site to every club or individual site if that is desireable and it is not a problem for me to update it and keep it current IF people send me the information. I have Front Page which makes it quick and painless. But the key thing to all of this is for those of you with access to the information to post the upcoming events in your district in the events forum.

You post the events and they are there. That simple. And, no, it doesn't have to be the events director to post it, although it would probably be good to let him know that you were going to do this so you could be sure all information is accurate.

The forum is here to use, but it is only as good as those who use it and contribute to it. If everyone is in the "read only" mode, there won't be any events to read in the events forum.

I guess the portion of this site dedicated to upcoming events slipped my mind as there does not appear to be much opportunity for libel and slander.

Steve does an *excellent* job in keeping NW fliers informed. That site, plus the Flying Lines newsletter, and JohnT's site, plus the optional use of telephonics when required, result in all of us up here being fully informed.

Some of the rest of you seem to have a problem. I suggest copying what Steve is doing.

When I said that a forum may not be the perfect way to show events, I was thinking of something along the lines of an actual calendar page...
