Need info on old Walker U-Reely Handle.

Hi everyone. I have come into posession of an old Jim Walker, U-Reely, Bakelight Handle. The one that has the red button that allows the pilot to run electric current to the aircaft to have retracts, throttle control, ect. My difficulty is, it came to me in peices and I have not been able to figure out how to put it back together again. Does anyone out there have a set of drawings for this that they could post or email to me? I would appreciate it, and the hair that I have left would not have to be pulled out!

You have come into possession of a piece of controline history. It is an artifact and probably worth saving, but speaking as one who learned to fly with a U-Reely, it is the sorriest excuse for a controlline handle imaginable. I would discourage you from using it. Also some of them showed a disturbing tendency to brake failure and the unintentional lengthening of flying wires.

I gotta agree with Mr. Rabe on this...Long years ago my brother dead-centered his Super Clown into a tree trunk that was safely (!) 20' beyond the flying circle--the U-Reely apparently came with about 100' of line on it; the brake--didn't. At least the lines slipped together. Oh, also, the blamed thing was so heavy you could hardly feel the plane through it. Put it on a shelf, or in a display cabinet.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I don't really have any intention of using it, as I learned to fly on one as well and remember the line extension problem! I would like to get this in shape though so I could show it to the "younger" aviators amoungst us.

You might ask Scott Riese to contact Frank Macy and see if he can reassemble it for you. Frank was an employee of American Junior, and is the guy that's making repro AJ stuff. Send Scott one of those SSW message things. Steve

I have Six U-Reely handles. I all ways have one in the car... GEE need to have a plane with a handle. Putting it back together is no problem.

I have two U-Reely's, equipped with 52' of .008" lines. I have used them to get the dreaded plastic 1/2a's airborne. Start with about 15' of line and once it's flying, roll some out to decrease the speed. It also serves as a pretty good demonstration of the drag, since I get the little planes performing with lots mot line length.

Then there's the story I read in a magazine of some guy in Australia who was flying a ROW CL model. The plan was to take off the water with the lines set short (the pilot was in waders, in a small pond), then to extend the lines after takeoff. Unfortunately, something got stuck in the handle, and....
