Fox .40 CL

What about Fox .40 CL (40014 Sport, 40010 Std. or 40016 Delux)?
Is it eligible for stunt? I wish to hear from you the pro’s and con´s about this engine. Thanks! My proyect is an Olympic Mk. VI

Stock, out of the box, it is a hot rod, but not a dragster. You will have to run it high rpm. It is not really a good stunt motor set-up. Get one from Lew Woolard and it is an excellent motor. Although he kind of prefers the ABC version, I still like the iron piston version best.

Derek Picard did a comparison test of six different 40's a number of years ago. A couple were reworked. A couple were box stock. Among them was a box stock Fox 40 and a reworked Fox 40 by Lew. The trouble with the test was he used the largest prop that the weakest engine could turn--a 10.5 x 6 and used the same prop for all engines. Can you imagine comparing a 15 FP with a Saito 72 and then using the prop that the 15 swings best on the 72? (I know, these were all 40s, but they were NOT all equals). Anyway, the upshot was Lew's engine came out best, in Derek's opinion. Even with the wrong prop. The stock engine did not fare very well in comparison.

Lew sent me the engine used in that test after Derek got through with it. I still have it, as a matter of fact. Instead of using the 10.5 x 6 prop that Derek used in his test, we put a 12 x 5 on it. It proved to be much better. It all goes back again to using the correct prop for the engine.

So the quick answer to your question is, if you plan to use the stock engine, you probably won't be happy with it. If you use one that Lew reworked (get it from him, don't bother to send one) you will like it.
