West Systems Filler #2

I thought #405 didn't sound right....

I bought #405 Fillet Maker filler as per Randy's instructions, but could not resist the #410 Microlight filler that weighed half as much, so I bought a can of that too.

I tested the #410 by accident. That is what I have been using and testing. It is awesome... It weighs NOTHING and sands beautiful.

Works great as a filler with fast CA for joints too (like baking soda). Sands great.

I've used the #410 stuff too and it is awesome. I used it to fill some dings in the current plane. The #405 is just a bit stouter. I used the #410 filler on the last plane to make fillets and had a few (very minor) problems with cracking so I tried the #405 this time.

Either is good. The #405 is actually called fillet maker and does that well.

A couple of thoughts on this:

Fillets in the WEST system vernacular are typically used on inside corners of structures where glass fabric is going over it. We use it a bit differently.

I have never seen a 410 fillet crack--did you mix it VERY dry?

Second, be careful of what you mix the 410 with. It will react and inhibit the cure of certain materials. In this regard it it different than glass microspheres which are pretty inert. For example, it doesn't do well when mixed with dope. I do use it with Ambroid for a quick dry ding and seam filler.
