interesting article, esp. since he did some direct comparisons. A good ring certainly seems like a good idea, if you have more than the cheapest possible engine in mind. The testing and thinking make a lot of sense. A well-fitted ringed piston can last nearly forever if you keep it clean.
Garafaoli(SuperTigre) did this back in the early '80's(?). They built quite a few ABCC engines, but it was panned in the modelling press. At the time straight ABC was thought to have more power, which it probably does, and require better fits, so Super Tigre had a small rep as cutting corners instead of making a "better" ABC motor.

I advocate the AAC ring. This is what is in Saitos. This configuration appears to be nearly indestructible (I know I have tried).
The AAC is even lighter than an ABC.
