Which OTS scoresheet is correct?

I came into posession of two OTS scoresheets. They show totally different scoring schemes! One has K-diffculty factors assigned to every maneuver, the other has bad/average/good/excellent columns instead.

Which one is the proper one? Which one is used at VSC?

It may be worse than that. OTS, being unofficial, may be subject to local variations. Clubs and organizers can fiddle a bit to reduce confusion for the judges they task to serve the flying.

As a PAMPA matter, though, look primarily at the scoring scheme in the PAMPA OTS rules.

I believe we've used the K-Factor sheet at VSC. The first written OTS rules were by John Miske, of the Garden State Circle Burners, and the scoresheet followed the 1951-52 AMA rules. The maneuver descriptions still follow that era, when they were Official AMA Rules. As the Precision Aerobatics event evolved, to 0-40 scoring system took over.

That way, at least, all the figures were judged to the same maximum value, reducing confusion. The 40-max system was adopted, I believe, before 1960. John Miske and the GSCB started OTS, prettymuch as we now know it, in the mid/late-1970's. They chose to stay with the 1951-52 scoring scheme for it. As the event spread across the country, other approaches "fit" local judges more comfortably. PAMPA's rules should now be the guide for almost all.

I'll try to check which, exactly, we'll use for this VSC and get word back to you.

Steve...The PAMPA OTS Score Sheet has "K" factor type scoring and only a 10 point non-flapped bonus.
The GSCB score sheet uses numbers within varying ranges and a 20 point non-flapped bonus.

As the PAMPA rules for OTS say, either method is OK but the contest organizer should say which is going to be used. Why, I don't know. It makes no difference to the flyer. I have judged both ways and it makes no difference to me. The only real difference is the no flap bonus. I can't afford to give away either 10 or 20 points, so I don't, so that point is moot also. I do intend to submit a rules change proposal to give 10 points for flying a period diesel. So there!

John Miske originated Old time Stunt in 1970. The purpose of the event was to prevent the loss of the old time stunt designs, which were not considered competitive with the modern stunt ships.

Old time stunt prospered for 28 years, still using the Garden State Circleburner rules. The GSCB rules were used for VSC 1. (1988)

After the first (or second) VSC the then PAMPA president got together a group who modified the GSCB rules into PAMPA rules for OTS. Why they wanted to modify the GSCB rules is an interesting question. The event was already wildly popular and flown at virtually all stunt contests.

I believe I have the GSCB Score sheets for OTS. We do give a bonus for ignition engines and non-flapped designs. I can email it to you if you would like.

BTW- Last year the GSCB started it's own club Hall of Fame and John Miske was the first recipient. Keep OTS going, boys!

The scoresheet on www.control-line.org is the GSCB version. I also have the other kind. I'll see if I can add it to the documents section as well.
