Sticking coverings on

A few weeks ago, I read about using Nitrate Dope instead of BalsaRite to more permanently adhere Coverite/MonoKote/whatever -

Must it be Nitrate Dope, or will Butyrate work as well? Butyrate seems to be more available here . . .

Nitrate dope is stickier than butyrate, but it is not fuel proof. It is said that you can apply butyrate over nitrate but not vice versa. I've always used nitrate underneath without any problems, however some folks have reported problems with that as well.

I love nitrate, it is lighter, stickier, and fills better. I also like to put it on over fillets, so that butyrate dope sticks better. But some extremely good finishers (like Windy Urtnowski) advise against using it. Look at the results Windy gets using only butyrate!

The safe, simple way is to go with butyrate all the way.

Amother thing I have read about, but not tried, is to use thinned down Titebond glue. Let it dry, then pretend it is Balsarite.

While I am hardly an expert when it comes to paint of any type, over the years I have often heard others refer to Coverite's "Balsarite" as merely being thick nitrate dope.

On the other hand, I have never known any of these guys to do anything other than buy Balsarite for their latest MonoKote-covered RC Pattern plane when it would be so simple to stop by Kenmore Air Harbor for a gallon of nitrate. Not to mention being a lot cheaper.

The glue idea sounds horrible.

Balsarite is fuel prof, nitrate dope isn't... I would not try to stick a plastic covering down with anything that fuel could get to.
