What's on your work bench?
I really like building, and several projects are underway.

And of course, when the wood order arrives, I WILL begin a new USA-1!!!!

O.K. You caught me - I have on my (work?) bench the following items...

1ea Incomplete Skylark .35 version

1ea Incomplete Original Excelsior (Based on SV foam wing)

1ea Incomplete Twister III (My mods not Teds, includes some experimental tip plates like on AB 320's)

1ea Box with a Brodak Viking for my OTS project when I get around to it? On a closet shelf..

1ea Brodak Original T-Bird that I am trying to trade for a T-Bird II.

Of couse my workbench is a 2.5X4 piece of shelving sitting on top of a cedar chest in my second bedroom. My finishing booth is in Ron King's basement whenever I get something to that point!!!!!!

Do you do all this indoors or outdoors?
You must have a really big workshop.How do you keep track of what your doing?One project is all my little pea brain can handle.

Well, my workshop isn't as big as some others, but I put in 16 feet of floor cabinets, and two work tables.. one of whick is a pool table that the covering came off of years ago. I have this covered with 3/8th glass plate. The other is a Craftsman upright tool chest with a 24 X 60 top that works great for building wings on. Ocassionally I build a wing on a display case that is glass topped. Storage room for planes and wood is getting scarce, but I plan on redoing another part of the basement for airplane storage. Probably build three more racks for the big planes.

The above list doesn't count a few 1/2 A planes and two OTS .09 size planes, either. But i have to wait on finishing them until I get some of the others done due to time constraints.

I can't believe how much you guys get done.....

On my workbench, in the midst of extra stuff crammed in the shop while hurricane repairs continue, is one scratchbuilt 52 Nobler. Wing is joined to fuselage and controls are being hooked up.

BTW Bill, what ya gonna use as a cowl for that Sheeks FW-190????

I will probably use the alternative balsa cowl shown on the plans. However, I am seriously considering making a plug and molding a fiberglass one. Wouldn't be hard at all to turn a plug on a wood lathe. I have enough mold material to make one.

Unfortunately, there's only one project in my shop at a time. Just the way I am, I suppose. Go from stack of balsa wood to completed plane in the rack, then clean up the shop and start the next project. And other things demand my time. 500 feet of horse fence is being worked on this winter, quite a lot of "landscaping" that includes about 50 feet of 5 foot tall rock wall, cleaning out about a 100 feet of berry vines along the creek bed and building a new road over the creek and up to the site of the new barn that is on the project list to build next. Yada, yada, yada.

So, planes sometime get short shrift. Hey, gotta keep the spouse happy.

Randy, I feel for ya man --- with property and horses seems like somebody frequently has something more important for you to do than play with those toy planes ( smile ).

Restoration of a Green Box Nobler

Repair of a hybrid Ringmaster wing and cut down Magician fuse and feathers. It looks like a small profile Nobler.

Going to start laying out a Don Still Stuka by RSM tonight. After that comes a Zilch Xpendable from a kit by Walter Umland. And, somewhere in there, I need to do some refurbishing on a Scared Kitten.

OTS Rulz!!

Wait until my film is developed with a CD that I can post. My new workbench in a heated double car garage with finished walls, ceiling and carpet floors! Bench is 10' X 4' with storage and shelves still being built.

I redid my shop a few years ago to give me more room. Put a lot of cabinets in and table area. Since that time It's been filled with 22 planes ready to go,almost 300 motors in several cabinets, 130 kits,not all C/L. and 3 planes to be finished. They are a Pathfinder,Veco Squaw,a Larry richards kit, and a Brodak Accentor,which I seem to have lost interest in. I enclosed my porch and the area underneat it and have in essence gained another storage room,I wonder how long it will stay vacant. Now if I only had a decent paint room.

I just got in 156 sheets of some pretty good wood (some of it is under 4 lbs, believe it or not!), so I will be able to start my replacement USA-1! I just need to get another really good ST 51. Or maybe a PA 51 SE. (??)
Can't wait to see yours.

Restored (?) SR-1 Ringmaster which I fly with Fox 35 but I am too embarrased to fly it anymore, because it has a warp in the outer wing panel which looks like he-- but doesn't hurt its flyability.

Ein Stuka ich habe nicht, ehe viel zeit on Pflugzeugen hoch.

Anyway I plan to do as much C/L flying this year as I can, ehe it makes Uncle Sam Happy!

You will really have an excellent fleet! I notice that the All American Senior, Smoothie, and Twister (versions) perform just classically at Pampa meets. Can't wait to hear about the upgraded Fox 35 in the Smoothie! Will you fly it at Brodak's in June?

Well, of three projects I currently have on the go, two of them were begun last winter - a Phoenix 2 which is ready-to-finish, and a Fancherized Twister which is still in many pieces (wing is framed up, fuselage is almost complete, flaps and tailfeathers still just rough-cutout and unassembled). The third project is a Walter Umland All-American Sr., which I began building last fall (October, I think). With any luck, I can get them all finished in time for flying season. I also plan to do a bit more finishing work on my Smoothie, such as further sanding/rubbing and touchups (including a bit more trim color - blue), even though I have flown it already 8 times. I've sent its Fox 35 to Larry Foster for improvements.

I'm hoping to have a fairly nice fleet come spring...

One Testors Senior 29 being retrofitted for another engine (must be ready for VSC)

My new JUNAR is nearly ready for clear... need to finish painting the flaps,sanding then paint the elevetors,,will have a PA.65 will come in right around 65 ounces.

My new Flite Streak ARF is about ready to be opened. Then the two NoblARFs will be opened. Shake the box, and it falls together, right?

I did an autopsy on the "LANCER" that I had the 2Star .60bb in. I came across some interesting details. I have considered hybrid leadouts like these, pic 1, seems like a good idea, but not exactly like this! Music wire on the SIG BC, cable outboard. Pic2, this wing was fully sheeted. Does anybody think these relatively shallow angle diagonal ribs (not full depth) make any sense? This planview (pic3) of the stabalizer is so that hopefully, somebody can tell me if this was an SV of some sort. Stab has a nice airfoil, not flat, and high aspect ratio, not like an Impact. And #4 is a picture of the root of the outboard wing, for structure and airfoil shape. It generally looked sorta like an SV-11. What was it? I liked it! The fuselage had been built like G'zilla's, with top and bottom "crutches" of 1/16" sheet. Is that normal on the SV's? The bottom itself appeared to be from 1/4" sheet, hollowed, over the 1/16" crutch. I don't see the reasoning behind that. Steve

Edit: Just found out the stabalizer is foam cored. Hmmmm. Broke easy, too.

What ever happened to the Dyna Jet powered,mule cart,with the firebaby wings you were working on?67% airfoil if I remember correctly.

I am currently starting on a Tempest II ;PA51 pipe power.
Why a 51 ? Because Randy Smith said so.
Building at my usual speed, I expect to have the wood out of the box by August at the latest:+

Our work shop is a 4 ft card table in the corner of the play room. We have a Flight Streak Trainer for the oldest son, and a Cadet for my youngest son. Almost finish with both. Now to find a Buster to hang our new Fox .15 on. (Thanks Dale)
Of course dad gets to fly them sometime.

As to the mule cart stunter, the mule went blind! And the reeds in the Dyna jet went south on the first flight. Getting one of the rocket scientists here to make some new ones out of unobtainium so that won't happen again.

After testing the prototype, it was discovered that the 67% airfoil wouldn't work, but that it would take a 66.83746599 % airfoil to prevent stall in the 3 1/2 foot radius turns that it is capable of. (All research done through super zoot supersonic telephoto hyper cameras plotted with secret, even to NASA, Southern Mountain Redneck Technology.)

That sounds a good as some of the technical mumbo jumbo I read, doesn't it?

Currently building a Umland All American Sr. Very easy/quick to build, gotta like laser-cut parts that fit perfectly.

Super kit as usual from Mr Umland!

A Cardinal that started from a star-crossed Brodak kit (I'll explain some time)is just about ready to connect the major components (wing, tail, fuselage etc) together and a Brodak Strega kit waits in the wings (no pun intended). About the end of this month is when I expect to get started on that one.
