My new one for 2004. Jet look

Thought I would post pics of my new one for this year after talking to Brad Walker about doing a R/C Pattern type plane and telling him my new one is in that vein. I am starting another one as the test flights show the design to be a good one. The first flights did however show that the short landing gear did not look good in the air so I made new longer ones that are on the plane in the pics.

Specs? Area 700, 30%tail, 18" moment, Rabe rudder, Ro-Jett 65 and Ro-Jett pipe, plastic tank. Wheels are some I picked up at Toledo show. They are light(not as light as the foam ones) and have aluminum hubs. Wheel is very soft rubber and should last a lot longer than the foam ones, which I wear out regular! They are Cermark brand. I have a very unique way of attaching wheel well covers and will do another thread on the procedure. Graphics are all Decals that I made on my computer including the Name and AMA/USA numbers, which is another thread for later.
Paint is PPG and the base is polycrylic and 3/4 ounce cloth. Wing is foam.Plane is heavier than I like and is partly the reason I am starting another! 64 ounces.

Nice plane, tell me, did you look at some pictures or plans of the Spectrum and Spectron Columbia before coming up with this plane?
Just curious about that. It really does resemble them pretty well.

Good to see you at the King Orange. My Mirada, which Kenny Stevens built and flew, is a loose take-off of the Curare pattern plane. The plans were drawn many years before Kenny got a hold of it and helped me publish it in Flying Models. I saw model that Norm Whittle did over ten years ago and it too had R/C pattern "looks" in its design and final configuration. I always like Formula type racer looks also, i.e. Miss Dara and other very slick looking designs.

Jim, Sorry I do not know the 2 planes you are referring to. Are you referring to the Jimmy Casale(sp) planes. I seem to remember something of those names in the planes he flew. I may have been influenced by many designs in my subconscious but, everything has already been done. It would be very hard to find something that has not been done. I sat down with pencil and paper and drew what I though I would like that would be different than what I have been seeing since I started flying stunt(3 years)and easy, uncomplicated to build. I incorporated several things that seem contrary to the norm, large tail with Rabe ruder (on a pipe plane), large stab and elevator(30%), large thick wing ala Patternmater. Everything is adjustable including the lead out up and down in the tip. The cowl is one piece all the way back to the pipe opening for easy access. When I take the cowl off the whole bottom is exposed.

Yes those are Jim Casale's last two planes (I have the plans for them). They had some form of scoops forward of the wing, but the planform pretty much matches you new plane. It is quite interesting that everything old is new again. I guess the song really does ring true! Oh well, I still like the powerful tail on you plane which my new Twister modification and the new pipe plane I am building will employ also. Of course you are from Texas so it wouldn't be hard for you to get the master (Al) to help you trim the rudder on the plane so that it doesn't induce some unwanted outward yawing. I have watched Windy fly his wiggly rudders and that's just what they do. Wiggle the airplane outboard unnecessarily. Good luck with this one. It looks like it can definitely get to the top rung of the ladder!!

I've watched Pat Johnston use wiggly rudders for years on both semi- scale planes and more conventional designs. He buiit a Spectrum with a wiggly rudder also. Never noticed any yaw problem with them once trimmed.

Trimmed properly the wiggly rudders work very well. It can be a little tricky to get them just right though.

While we're looking at jet styles (I love 'em) let's not forget Hunt's CROSSFIRE! I ripped off that design and kit bashed a Randy Smith DREADNOUGHT into a CROSSFIRE look alike. I call it the DOUBLECROSS! See Pics...

The pictured model looks terrific in all ways.

However, it doesn't look much like an RC Pattern plane to me. Maybe one from 10-15 years ago, certainly not at all like the current designs.

And that is probably a good thing. Even my Ford van would choke in trying to swallow a current, and one-piece, RC Pattern model along with all the other models I drag to contests.
