Cloth hinges

I just bought a 1/2 yard of Rayon "Taffeta" material. This stuff is great for "over-and-under hinges, like in the olde days.

Send a SASE and I'll send enough material for several models. It works best with SIG cement. (Ambroid seems to dissolve the material).

X-CELL Models (Lew McFarland) used to sell great cloth hinges. They were cut from rolls of Un-inked Typewriter Ribbon; a nylon tape. I still have a roll of the stuff, although I have no clue as to where one might obtain it today.

I believe I read about using taffeta hinge material in the construction article for the Cobra, maybe 10 years ago ? ? ?

Hi Floyd!! Hey, I would be very reluctant to use any cloth that will disolve with model cement, actone, dope thinner, or any solvent. I have had my share of grief with failed polyester taffeta hinges and even some made of hang glider cloth. Fuel and oil will get to them sooner or later. Warren Tihart and Bill Werwage told me about nylon ripstop cloth and that is what I now use. It dosen't seem to be affected by solvents or dope. Available at any good fabric store. Best Regards, Roy
