Line Lengths

I've been out of CL a long time. The last time I purchased a rules book was in the 70s and things have changed with some very large models now.

So are there classes with different size engines and line lengths?

I know that speed has classes based upon engine size--and they spec line length.

For Precision Aerobatics (Stunt) we utilize skill classes--Beginner (Easier pattern) Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert (all fly full modern pattern) these can use any engine size and plane size with a maximum of 70' from handle to plane centerline. THe model/powertrain will determine usable line length. (maybe 52' for a .15-.19, 60' for .29-.35, 62' for .40, and near max for .51-.65) THese are rough ballpark numbers.

In addition, there is a "class" for Old TIme Stunt which flies the 1952 pattern, and a "class" for Classic planes designed and published prior to 1969 I recall. Each has its own set of guidelines and rules but none of the rules is based upon engine size--so power and line set-up is determined by the flier.

edit: Navy Carrier also uses engine size classes. Not sure about scale, I don't think so.

The rule book does specify line diameter as per engine size. I believe it to be; .10 - .40 ci, stranded line dia is to be no less than .015 solid to be no less than .012 For .40 ci and larger, stranded line dia is to be no less than .018 and solids, no less than .014. Larry NorCal Circle Jerks;)
