Well it seems the 4 stroke bug has hit me.
After alot of indecision I have decided to put my .40FS 4 stroke on my Nobler arf I also have a Magnum .52 Im planning on putting on my Brodak Pathfinder. I know the 4 Stoke on the nobler will most likely make me have to add a lil tail weight but I think I'll live with it.

Is there anything I should be aware of when going 4 stroke on control line planes? This will be my first venture into the world of 4 strokes on anything control line. I allready know about what happens when they start backwards in an enclosed cowl Did that on one of my rc planes a few years back. I am hoping to get them running good enough for an intermediate flyer using the RC carbs.

I am even considering purchasing a .30 or .32 4 stroke for on my flite streak hehe

First rule of 4 strokes on control line planes; use a 72 Saito, just joking. Most of us 4 strokers have had good success using any size of Saito brand engines. That, said, " use what you brung." Employ a nice long break-in below 4000 rpm. Always try to run your 4 stroke 500 rpm's below it's max. Don't over prop the Saito's. I won't comment on fuel because there is some controversy there. I use fuel custom mixed to my specifications. Based on your plane and experience level, I would reccommend the Saito 40a for you. Absolutely great 4 stroke engine for the 4 beginner.

Your OS 40 FS surpass that I beleive you have is a great handling motor also and is used by lots of flyers.Use 15% fuel or higher,a type F os plug and a plastic 4oz tank set up uniflow.

BY FAR the most important thing is to use a clunk tank. All I have seen suggest they work best with suction, not uniflow, but a clunk is the way to go. Second is to use a low-viscosity fuel like YS 20/20. Third is to try to get a real venturi instead of the stock carb. You can get away with the stock carb, but it will never be entirely steady. If you do use the carb, set it as it says in the instructions over the full range of travel. Use a prop somewhere between 4 and 5" of pitch.

In short, do what Godzilla says to.

There's really not much to do to the engine aside from making sure it can suck fuel.

My plastic tank is set up with a clunk with uniflow and it works great.I beleive it is the same as you stated.

Bud, I have a Saito40 on my Nobler ARF and it flies better than it did when I had a Randy Smith Fox 35. I blew the con rod on the fox and had the 40 , I checked the motor mounts and all holes lined up so the Saito 40 was the choice motor, well its great, the fox had about three oz of nose weight and with the Saito none. The only problem was the cowl it does'nt match to the spinner. I used the same tank and location for the Saito as the Fox and their is no difference in flight inverted or right side up it just runs great and the sound is great. you wont be sorry. O yes and it gets one flip starts right side up. See Ya NEAL

Bud,

Just finished up my ARF Flite Streak with a Saito 30, full gear, replaced the bellcrank/leadouts, real hinges, and lots of epoxy. Needed about an ounce of tail weight. Came out at 30 oz. It is still nose heavy, will flight test before putting on more tail weight. Had to mount the tank on the inboard side because there was not enough room behind the engine. Will try to get a picture on it tonight.

Heres the pics...

I have a magnum .30 on the way for mine. The Saito .30 weighs 10.8 ounces. The Magnum .30 Weighs 9.5. Thats why I got the Magnum. I really love the Saito engines. But I thought the savings in weight at that point was more of an advantage. My .30 should be here this week. Im planning on putting a clunk tank on mine.

Im going to save a lil more weight on front using some of these for gear.

Hi

Flitestreak ARF, old well run OS FS20, 9X5 apc and home brewed uniflo tank, fuel 10 caster 10 nitro 5 synthetic,, 60 foot 012 lines, flew when the local F2d boys were not game to go 2 up, round manouvers were OK but challenging, went out yesterday for a spin at lunch time and managed an almost recognisable F2b pattern, a joy to fly, this one had been crashed and re built, first try was with an old loop scavenged OS MAX .25, 10X4 prop plenty of power but running upright outer wing low, hmmmm tip weight or warp, flip to inverted WARP !!! flew across the circle and tent pegged, not pretty, the fuse and outer wing were crunched, all better now but the outer wing is now transparent with the supplied decals to try and make it pretty again.

Had the FS 20 in a veco Tom Tom for a while, even flew it to a 5th place in sportsman aerobatics at our national championships, alas the ground claimed that one too, another story.

The FS20 does not like a lot of oil, won't set well on 20 % or a lot of prop, 9X5 is good, but 9.5X4.5 is better, just love that sound
