What is the trick to installing a spinne

What is the trick to installing a spinner. Everytime I tighten the prop nut the plastic back of the spinner turns about 1/4" to 1/2" making it impossible to get the front half of the spinner on. I just spent 20 minutes trying to get the spinner on my new airplane. I put grease between the nut and flat washer hoping the friction between the prop and plastic would be more than the friction between the nut and washer it did not work either. Every plastic spinner I have does this. If I had something like a double sided sand paper flat washer it might work. I glued the prop to the plastic back of the spinner all I have to do now is wait for the glue to dry. There must be a better way to do this.

That sounds like a weird one......most of the time I just hand tightenthe prop till it lines up with the two pins on the backplate then hold the prop still and tighten the nut......sounds very strange that the backplate spins when you do the nut up......got me beat.

The problem you've encountered is fairly common I believe especially with a hard surface prop the rough bits on the spinner backplate dont grip easily. I have come to the habit of carrying washers made of sandpaper in my flight box and they come in mighty handy. I have been known to hand them out to others also. I find the 80 grit works best for me but I suspect any reasonably course grit would be fine as long as the paper is fairly heavy. the course grit seems to push through the paper so double sided is not required... The other time they come in handy is when the backplate starts rubbing on the front of the fuse and then you need to add one washer between the engine drive plate and the spinner back plate. I use a leather workers hole punch to cut the holes in the course sandpaper. Keith V

Have you thought about what is going to happen when you break the prop? Just curious.....

Keith has handed a couple out to me. They work.

I ended up making some shim washers out of some thin brass stock for spacers between the nose and back plate of the spinner. They tend to form themselves to the thrust washer of the engine pretty easily too.

Similar problem when having to use a prop extension. I make the "washer" spoken of out of 80 grit emery cloth. No problems after several years of use. Just trace the prop driver on the back of the cloth and cut out.

I get that problem on engines that have a collett that the thrust washer tightens onto-STs, Brodak 40s, ROs and PAs, etc. The whole thing just turns, no tightening. ( I considered a small impact (no pun) wrench, but what are the chances of getting alignment on the spinner backplate?) Sandpaper disc is what I use now, having noticed that some spinners include them in the package. Used to put a soft stick in the exhaust but with an expensive motor, just can't do it. Especially if it is piped or muffled. Best regards,

Although it sounds like it may not be necessary, isn't the sanding screen designed for sanding sheetrock essentially double sided? I know it comes as course as 80 grit. FWIW.

80 grit 100 grit 220 grit ALL works. I use a 1/4" paper hole punch. MAKE alot a give them to your friends and save some.
