2 questions.

1. Why does this crank case cover have this notch place cast into it. What is the purpose of the notch on this McCoy 35 engine?

2. Crank case cover has a specific location the notch is always on the left side. Why is it on the left side?

Answer to both questions: better tranfer to the bypass.

And of course, the NEXT question is: does it really make any difference?

Sometimes a backplate cover will have two notches in it. One, as Bill says is for better fuel air transfer at the bypass side of the engine.
The other is usually to provide clearance for the cylinder, and it will be at the top of the backplate.

You can move the glow plug hole around at random on a Redhead, and it pretty much doesn't matter.

On those Sand Cast Foxes, with the 5:1 compression ratios, you could just about mount the heads fins down, and it's machts nichts too.
