Balsa Selection Resource

Having followed the discussions intently in the "Techniques" thread, I have started to review some of my own methods and choices. One of the comments Leonard made toward the end of that discussion regarded selection of the sheeting material itself--use of 4-6 lb vs something slightly denser.

Is there a quality, comprehensive balsa selection reference available that covers proper selection of grain and density for various application points in our planes?

I think SIG had something like this on their website, but right now they aren't answering the bell. They used to have it in their catalogue, also.

Remember, also, as you select wood for the next plane, that strength goes up approximately equal to weight. An 8 pound density sheet would be approximately twice as strong as a 4 pound wood of the same tipe. ETC.

I have a density chart that I started and hope to get up on the web site sometime. (Lots of "sometimes".)

That's a file I scanned several years ago from a SIG flyer I picked up at the LHS. I know it's the one I scanned because the right side of the top right "S" is cut off. I'm glad to see it's out there!
