Finally Some More Progress on the Magici

This post may shed some light on one earlier on yellow paint. There are some pics at the end. I finally have made some more progress on the Magician I've been working on. Got the wing mounted, the flaps on and drilled all the holes for the tank, landing gear, control horns, etc. and started putting on the dope. I am lucky enough to have Jim Lee live not too far away and the let me come over and use his shop and gave me some good advice on painting. I like the yellow on his Humongous. It's kind of a translucent yellow. It's Sig Cub Yellow. Anyway, Got several clear coats on over at jim's and learned a couple of tricks for setting it up. Used Jim's Harbour Frieght Gun. Works real nice. Then noticed Harbor Frieght has their HVLP Gun on sale, $39.99, normally $64.99. Decide to get one. Took a little fooling around with it, but got it to lay down a nice smooth pattern. Very good paint transfer.

Jim says there is lot of pigment in the Sig dopes. I can tell you his is right. I mixed up 7 ounces of thiner, 4 ounces of clear with one ounce of Cub Yellow. That much turned out to be just enough to give the whole model one good coat. I remixed with the same ratios and shot it one more time. Guess what...the wing (covered part) is pretty much opaque. So much for getting the translucent finish on the wing.

The rest of the model is pretty much translucent and would need more to cover the grain, but i am going to paint red (or blue) over most of it anyway. I like the translucent finish, but if one were to want an opaque color over the entire model, it would seem a base coat is the way to go. However, I am amazed at the amount of coverage I got using just two ounces of color.

You're right!!! Jim is a great guy and great to have living so close. Not too many things he hasn't already dealt with. I've Got a really nice running pre-lighting bolt 35 for it. What else??

Your Magician really looks nice. I had a Magician before and it flew great. I like the fixture used to hold the magician. Do you have any infomation on the fixture you can email. I am interested in a fixture to hold my airplanes so I can paint or work on them.

Thanks and don't cut yourself short. I am hardly in the same class with most on this forum. I am just learning to paint, myself. And, my Magician is built from one of Walter Umland's kits. Let me tell you...Walter puts together one heck of a nice kit! You will not be disappointed!

I got the idea for the stand from Jim Lee. Look at the first of the earlier pictures to see one of Jim's. They are not too hard to make. Mine is just two pieces of one inch lumber about 4" x 7" mounted on a 2 x 4 base. See photos. I used a one inch hole saw in my drill to cut the holes for the dowel. The dowel is just a piece I got from a worn out lawn rake handle. The last photo shows the clip to keep the dowel from coming out....which it will if you don't put something back there. You can get the clips at the local hardware store or use a piece of piano wire to make one.

Note the tubbing used to hold the model out away from the holder. This one of the tips Jim showed me. They are just short pieces of brass tubing in-between the mount and the model.

I made the "U" shaped piece for the motor mount out of some sheet aluminum. Depending on the engine you're going to use, you'll need a couple of them so the holes line up, but no big deal.

I mounted my stand on a saw horse, but any mount would do that's away from things you don't want to paint. Might want to make the dowel a little longer than mine so you can get in to the very front of the model with paint. I'll make the next one longer.

I drilled holes at right angles and stick a long allen wrench tool in there to hold it steady. That's about it.
