ST G21 .35 question

I picked up a ST G21 .35 at the local swap meet this weekend. After taking it apart I have discovered that the wrist pin is held in with clips – like a Fox. I thought they had brass ends on them like the .46. Anyway, one is missing or broken off. Is there a source for them or can I put a plastic pad in there? If so what material can I use?

The circlips are larger than the Fox 35 sizes, and smaller than the Fox MK VI clips. You should use the clips if at all possible. If you put out the word that you need them you will probably get several responces.
I got some that way a couple of years ago.

They're not all that difficult to make, if it comes down to it. I used solid flying lines or Stanzel Monoline. You could just buy a 1/4 lb. of music/piano wire from the local hardware store or piano tuner. Copy the clip closely, avoid a sharp 90 bend, get it as flat as possible, and file off the burrs on the ends. A decent hemostat helps for install/removal without them boinging off across the shop. I have some .35C's, so I guess I could copy one of those, if you run out of ideas. Pretty sure they'd be the same PN. I probably have all the old spools of wire. Steve

One is, I beleive, on the way. Thanks to all. Now I have to get the broken one out. I'm thinking two needles to try and get under the end. One just makes it turn in the slot.

I may be missing something here, but if you are missing one circlip, Marvin is sending a replacement, why are you trying to remove the single circlip still in the piston? Won't you just have to install another one? And if piece in there now is hard to get out, isn't that a good thing?

Or maybe the circlip is not actually broken. Even when installing factory-produced circlips--and I have bent up many of these clips as Steve suggests--I would generally whack off the little tail which sticks to the inside of circlip.

Don't anybody beat me up on this, but the theory was that the little tail weighs something and that something goes a lot higher each time the rod stops the piston and then starts it going in another direction. If the circlip is in the right position it is possible for this extra bit of weight to collapse the clip, it drops out of piston, instant mess.

The wire is small enough (.013) that it fits entirely in the groove allowing the wrist pin to come out. As a result the there is some slight burnishing on the liner. So what I have is the clip filling most of the groove but not retaining the wristpin. Is it possible that the clip is too thin and should be of thicker wire? Probably still not clear but the best I can do. Actually Hothandle asked for my address so I’m guessing that he is sending one.

It would appear to me that you are correct in assuming the installed clip is too small in diameter; yep, it's gonna have to come out.

The little tail on these clips is most definitely not there to hold the wristpin in the piston. The tail seems to be a pretty handy thing to have while bending them up, either during high-volume production or roll-your-own fabrication at home. And it kinda gives one something to hang on to during installation.

Other than those two uses--well, three, as they are easier to get out later on--in my experience the tails can cause some pretty serious problems, although possibly not in low-rpm Stunt engines.

Still, I clip 'em off.
